Durham, North Carolina - Bobby Van Hunt, 75, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023 at his home after being cared for by family and Duke Hospice. He is preceded in death by his father, Sam Hunt Sr.; mother, Betsy Mangum Hunt; and brother, Sam Hunt Jr.
Bobby was born on August 3, 1948 in Durham, NC. He graduated from Northern High School where he was a four-sport athlete earning numerous accolades. Baseball was his first love and he pursued playing professionally after high school. He ultimately decided to settle down in Durham, begin his career, and marry the love of his life, Deborah Daniel, on March 31, 1973.
Bobby retired from the City of Durham in 2000 and spent his retirement years doing what he loved most, namely spending time with his beloved family. He enjoyed traveling to the beach, gardening, listening to country music, cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the NC State Wolfpack, and perhaps most of all, watching his grandchildren play the sports he loved or perform on stage.
Bobby had a true servant's heart and was always willing to lend a hand to others. He volunteered in many roles at Yates Baptist Church including serving as a long-time usher and member of the House and Grounds committee. He also enjoyed fellowship at church, and played on the church softball, basketball, and volleyball teams. Bobby spent countless hours volunteering as a youth softball, baseball and basketball coach in the local community. He also volunteered with Angel Flight providing transportation for critically ill patients.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 50 years, Deborah Daniel Hunt; daughters, Karen Hunt Burgin and husband Benjamin, Bethany Hunt Slack and husband Andrew; son, Brian Daniel Hunt; grandchildren, Ryland Burgin, Dalton Burgin, Kailyn Burgin, Austyn Slack, Luke Slack, James Slack, Patrick Slack; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 11 am at Yates Baptist Church in Durham. Burial will follow the service at Markham Memorial Gardens. The visitation will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
