Cedric Jones Obituary

Mr. Cedric H. Jones, Sr. was called from earthly labor to a heavenly reward at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Salisbury, NC on Monday, September 24, 2007.
His funeral will be 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 29, 2007 at First Baptist Church-West 1801 Oaklawn Ave., Charlotte, NC 28216 with Rev. Dr. Ricky A. Woods officiating.
Mr. Jones was an educator and retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. He was born in Wake County, NC on September 16, 1917 to the late Trumella Jones Bell and Howard Jones. He attended public schools in Wake and Johnston Counties in North Carolina, graduating from Cooper High School in Clayton, NC. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC in 1941, where he majored in English and received his master's degree in 1948 from Columbia University in New York City. As an educator in North Carolina for 60 years, Mr. Jones taught at Second Ward, West Charlotte, and Garinger High Schools in Charlotte. He also served as principal in Hendersonville, Henderson County, NC. During his tenure as an educator, he was an instructor at Central Piedmont Community College, Carver College, Johnson C. Smith University, and Barber Scotia College in Concord, NC.
Mr. Jones served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church- West for over 59 years and served as a church layman and as a chairman of the Deacon Board. A committed and loyal servant of his church, he was President of the Mecklenburg General Baptist State Convention Congress on Christian Education, The Baptist Training Union for 15 years and the past president of the General Baptist State Convention Congress on Christian Education. Mr. Jones never forgot about his Alma Mater, Shaw University and was a great supporter of that institution in many ways as long as he able. He was one of the founding members of the Fred Brewer Alumni Chapter of Shaw University. He was inducted into the NC Layman's League Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was a legend in his on time. He worked his way completely through college and was always industrious and hard-driving. His peers states that he could go to college for half a day and then pick three hundred pounds of cotton by hand during the second half of that same day, a feat that many could not duplicate.
His survivors include a loving wife, Mrs. Clara Jones; three daughters, Mona Roberts (Malcolm) of Boston, MA, Dr. Cedrella Taylor of Atlanta, GA and Ina Jones of Charlotte; a son, Rev. Cedric H. Jones, Jr. (Burunda) of Philadelphia, PA; and nine grandchildren.
It must also be added that he never forgot about the home folks around Garner, NC and Clayton, NC and especially at Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church on White Oak Road.

I am so sorry for your loss. I did not have the pleasure of being one of his students at Garinger, but I grew up with Cedric and spent some time at your home.

My prayers are with you. Know that he's now free to soar to higher heights with the saints of the living God.

May you find comfort in knowing it is well with his soul.
