Charles Revelle Obituary

Charles Leslie Revelle, Jr., 81, a businessman and community leader died Monday, November 19, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Revelle was a native of Murfreesboro, the son of the late Charles L. Revelle, Sr. and Floy Daniel Revelle. He was a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, Staunton Military Academy, UNC Chapel Hill and the U.S. Navy preflight training program. While attending UNC, he served as a house manager fro the ATO fraternity.
Except for the one year he spent in sales for Fieldcrest Mills in New York City, immediately following his 1947 UNC graduation, he devoted his entire life to the Roanoke Chowan counties and Southeast Virginia. His vocations included real estate, cotton ginning, grain elevators, feed manufacturing, development of the first mechanical peanut drying equipment, sale and construction of buildings for agricultural, commercial and industrial uses, and introduction of the first farm irrigation systems in the Roanoke Chowan and Southeast Virginia areas.
Mr. Revelle was an active member and past president of the North Carolina Grain Dealers association, the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Board of Ridgecroft School. He served on the advisory boards of several national agricultural and building companies. Revelle served on the Board of Directors of Southern Bank and Trust Company and was also a director of the Southern Bank Foundation. He was an avid supporter and promoter of Chowan University. In the sixties, he served the town as councilman and planning board chairman. He took joy in his service with the Murfreesboro Baptist Church as deacon, stewardship chairman for 30 plus years and recently as chairman of the building committee that completed the new fellowship center along with the renovation of the Sunday School and Music Departments. Charles was founder and CEO of Revelle Agri Products, which constructed more than one thousand agricultural related buildings during the 1965-1980 period. He was also founder of Revelle Builders for commercial, educational, and industrial building systems. In Revelle's post age 75 period, he developed a strong interest and dedication for Hospice and the Hertford County Chapter of the Salvation Army, serving as a volunteer for both. He believed you are never too old to volunteer to help your community.
His hobbies followed closely those of his father. Hunting and fishing, both freshwater and saltwater, were a top priority. Also included was boat building plus cruising the Chowan River, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Southern Intracoastal Waterway. Currituck Sound was a favorite place. In all activities, his family was first and foremost.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Margaret Person Revelle; sons, Charles L. "Chuck" and wife, Bonnie, Henry and wife, Sara all of Murfreesboro; daughters, Meg and husband, David Chapin of Raleigh, Emily and husband, Van Beck of Davidson; also surviving are ten grandchildren, Thomas, Rachel, Emily, Harrison, and Leslie Revelle, and Dylan Taylor Joll of Murfreesboro, Sarah and Samuel Chapin of Raleigh, Patrick and Matthew Beck of Davidson; a brother, John P. Revelle and wife, Barbara of Murfreesboro; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Person of Louisburg; four nephews, Jay and Dan Revelle, Matt and Brad Person; one niece, Paige R. Polito.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2007, at Murfreesboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lee Canipe and Rev. Thomas Caulkins officiating. A family only graveside will follow in Riverside cemetery.
The family will receive friends at anytime at his home on Woodridge Drive and also at the home of Chuck and Bonnie Revelle, 511 Lakeview Drive, Murfreesboro, between the hours of 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday. I will always remember Mr. Revelle for the interest he took in the people around him and for his kindness. Those qualities are not often found in a person who is also such a strong leader in his community. Mr. Revelle was an outstanding role model and great friend.
