Charlotte Shaffer Obituary

Charlotte Winborne Shaffer, 90 of Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem, NC, died on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mrs. Shaffer was born in Marion, North Carolina on March 8, 1914, the daughter of the late John Wallace and Charlie May Blanton Winborne. Her father served as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She graduated from St. Mary's School in Raleigh, NC in 1932 and received her AB degree at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1934. At UNC she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
In 1939, she married Charles Milton Shaffer of Greensboro, North Carolina. The Shaffers lived in Burlington and in Greensboro before moving to Chapel Hill in 1952.
Charlie and Charlotte Shaffer were married for 64 years until his death in July 2004. They lived at 716 Gimghoul Road in Chapel Hill for 50 years from 1952 to 2002, and they have been devoted to Carolina and Chapel Hill since they were students there 70 years ago. Mr. Shaffer served as the first Director of Development at Carolina for many years, and for 50 years Mrs. Shaffer was a gracious representative of her beloved Carolina to its alumni and friends.
Mrs. Shaffer and her husband were awarded the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus and Alumnae Awards given by the UNC Alumni Association. The Charles Milton and Charlotte Winborne Shaffer Scholarship Fund established by their two children in 1988 provides scholarship assistance to deserving North Carolina students.
Mrs. Shaffer was an active and devoted member of the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill for 50 years. She was a leader of the Altar Guild serving as chairman many times. She also served as Secretary of the National Association of Diocesan Altar Guilds. While in Chapel Hill she was active in the University Woman's Club and was a sponsor for the UNC Newcomers Club.
Mrs. Shaffer cherished her extended family and instilled the highest values in her family members. She always fondly remembered her upbringing in Marion, NC,and she loved the beauty of flowers and the joy of being with her many friends and neighbors.
The Shaffers moved to Winston- Salem in 2002 and were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Shaffer is survived by a son, Charles M. Shaffer, Jr. and wife, Harriet Houston Shaffer of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter, Winborne Shaffer Chandler and husband, Dr. Dudley Carlyle Chandler, Jr. of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Charles Milton Shaffer, III and wife, Karen of New York City, NY, Caroline Shaffer Vroon and husband, Bryan of Atlanta, GA, Emi Shaffer Gragnani and husband, Michael of Atlanta, GA, Dudley Carlyle Chandler, III and wife, Allison of Montgomery, AL, Charlotte Chandler Broughton and husband, David of Winston-Salem; 10 great-grandchildren, Charles Milton Shaffer, IV, Ada Ayers Shaffer, Andrew Houston Shaffer, David Charles Vroon, Dylan Robert Vroon, Daniel Shaffer Vroon, Margaret Wilder Chandler, Dudley Carlyle Chandler, IV, Charlotte Winborne Broughton, and Eleanor Popham Broughton.
A funeral service will be held at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church, Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen Elkins- Williams officiating. The family will greet friends in the reception hall at the church following the service. A private burial will be held at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
