Courtney Mitchell Obituary

Courtney "Buzz" Mitchell, Jr., of Kinston, passed away Friday, November 30, 2007.
Born December 4, 1919, he was the middle son of Lois Brown and Courtney Mitchell, Sr. of Kinston, where he lived his entire life.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Billy Mitchell and Jim Mitchell; and his wife of 52 years, Rachel Carraway Mitchell.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Mitchell Weeks; a son, Courtney Mitchell, III and his wife, Cheryl; a grandson, Courtney Mitchell, IV, all of Kinston; and several nieces and nephews, June Mitchell Phillips and husband of Winterville, Jan Mitchell Hekhius and husband of Burgaw, Lois Marie Mitchell Kelly of Morehead City, and William T. Mitchell, Jr. and wife of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two life-long friends who held a very dear place in his heart, Beverly Stevens and Palmer Sugg.
After graduating from Grainger High School, Mr. Mitchell attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and also a member of UNC's first swim team. Graduating from UNC, Buzz served in the Navy during World War, II and was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX. There he taught gunnery and participated on the U.S. Navy Skeet Team. After the war, Buzz returned to Kinston, where he and his brother, Jim Mitchell operated Mitchell Oil Company and Wooten Gas Company. Buzz loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and lived a life of 88 years to its fullest. He was active in the Power Squadron, the National Rifle Association and various hunting and fishing related organizations. His friendships with others spanned generations, and the impact he made on countless people through hunting and fishing is legendary, as was he.
A memorial service will be held from St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree Street, Kinston, at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2007.
Visitation will immediately follow the service at the home of Sarah Weeks, 1105 Walker Drive, Kinston.

To Sarah and Court,
I am so sorry to learn of Buzz's death and so very happy to have seen him, you, and Palmer at the funeral and memorial luncheon for Aunt Elsie (Simon) two months ago. I now realize even more what a very big effort it was for him to attend. We shared some great stories, didn't we? He told me his one wish was to make it through another hunting season. I guess it was not to be. I have so many, many fond memories of growing up visiting Kinston and Camp Bryan, and Buzz was a big part of that. He was a character, just like Uncle Ellis. Their friendship spanned so many years. One of my fondest memories is Buzz and Rachel hosting Uncle Ellis' surprise 80th birthday, with all the members of Camp Bryan and friends there to celebrate. Please accept my sincere condolences.
With love,
Deborah

I met Buzz 20 plus years ago at the "Glaxy Sports Club". he always called me "young man" I always enjoyed listining to Jody Woolard and Buzz share their stories.I still remeber driving up in the Galaxy parking lot early Sat AM, and seeing "Buzz" truck parked there. He come walking up with his dog.If I can stay half as "active and sharp" as Buzz was, I'll be content. Buzz loved life and i know he would want this to be a celebration of Life
