Daniel C. Austin, Sr.
January 15, 1931 - March 9, 2022
Raleigh, North Carolina - Dan Austin Sr. went to heaven on March 9, 2022 at the age of 91. He was born on January 15, 1931 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dan and his parents, Louise L. Austin and Wilbur C. Austin, moved to Atlanta, Georgia when Dan was five. After graduating from Georgia Tech, Dan joined the Air Force as a second lieutenant. He served as an intercept controller during the Korean War in Casablanca, French Morocco. After serving in the Air Force, he worked for Gulf Oil in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1959, Dan began his lifelong passion; building and developing. He was the past President of the Raleigh Homebuilders Association, past Builder of the Year for Raleigh, past President of North Raleigh Rotary Club, Treasurer of Newbern Avenue Daycare Center, past Director of Family Services of Wake County, past founding Director of Carolina Federal Savings and Loan, past Director of Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, member of the Salvation Army's advisory board, and past Triangle Developer of the Year.
Dan was dedicated to God, his family and friends. Dan was a faithful, selfless, dependable, honest, loyal and patient man. His laugh and smile were infectious.
Dan is survived by the love of his life, Joanne Austin, by his three children, Gail Young (Steve), Dan Austin Jr (Brenda), Stephen Austin, by his six grandchildren Christopher Young, Kelly Young, Laura Austin, Aimee Rich, Dan Austin III, Pam Hancock and by his great granddaughter, Riley Grace.

I just learned of Dan´s death, and I offer my deepest sympathies to his family, especially his sweet and devoted wife Joanne. He and the Austin family became neighbors when we moved to Raleigh in 1969. He and my Dad became good friends and remained so until my Dad´s death in 2011. Dan´s company built my first house, and my late husband and I loved to visit with him and Joanne occasionally. If we ran into him in Hilton Head, his hospitality and generosity knew no bounds. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and for all his accomplishments in life was so down to earth and unassuming. My love to all the Austin family.

I remember meeting Mr. Austin and his family through the Garner family. I remember him fondly as one that was so kind and his eyes just sparkled. We were so very sorry to hear of his passing. It is so bittersweet, as we rejoice he is now with his Savior but know the loss here on earth is profound. Please know we are praying for you all.

I have been building homes for 40 years. I was a young inexperienced 22 yr old when I came to explore the Raleigh building industry in 1980. He was one the initial builders I spoke with. He was very gracious, patient and helpful to a young man he had never met. The conversation helped give me direction. Prayers for your family.
