Daniel Cameron Obituary
Daniel David Cameron, of Wilmington, NC, died July 2, 2005 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Dan was born in Wilmington on October 16, 1921 to Bruce Barclay and Lottie Fales Cameron.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Henderson Cameron, and their five children; Swanna C. Saltiel and her husband Alan of Ann Arbor, MI, Daniel D. Cameron, Jr. of Durham, NC, William H. Cameron and his wife Mary Jo of Wilmington, Charlotte C. Marshall and her husband John of McLean, VA, and Hilda C. Dill and her husband Matthew of Wilmington.
He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; Jason, Aren and Jared Saltiel of Ann Arbor, MI, Memory, Will and David Cameron and Hayden and Cameron Pappas of Wilmington, Anne Elizabeth and Catherine Tarrants of McLean, VA, and Elisabeth and Margaret Dill of Wilmington. Also surviving are his brothers Bruce B. Cameron and Robert F. Cameron and his wife Libby of Wilmington, and his sistersHilda Echols of Wilmington, and Rachel Camp and her husband Jack Camp of Franklin, VA.
After graduating from New Hanover High School in 1938, he attended Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. where he graduated in 1942 with a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the European theater during WWII arriving at Normandy Beach on D Day + 3. Dan often said he considered each day that he lived thereafter to be a gift. He left the service at the rank of Major.
Following the war Dan returned to Wilmington where he became involved in business and civic affairs. Like his father, he was elected Mayor of the city. He was instrumental in the formation of the Committee of 100, which helped revitalize industry in the area after the departure of the Atlantic Coast Line Rail Road. He served on boards of many organizations and was a long time active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder.
A devoted husband, father and friend, asuccessful business leader and a tireless community servant, he lived his life to the fullest. Dan will be remembered for hisintegrity, enduring optimism, and his genuine love of people. He believed every person he met was a person worth knowing. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
There will be a visitation for family and friends on Tuesday, July 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 6,2005 at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
