David Bowers Obituary

David Bowers
July 14, 1951 - December 23, 2021
Durham, North Carolina - David J. Bowers, a resident of Durham, North Carolina, died of a cardiac event in a home he loved on December 23, 2021.
David was born on July 14, 1951, in Circleville, Ohio to parents Ellen and John Bowers. In 1977, he graduated from nursing school, where he met his wife, Donette. That same year, they moved to Durham, and David began working as a Registered Nurse at Duke University Medical Center. He dedicated much of his life to nursing in adolescent psychiatry and orthopedics. An amputee himself, he took great pride and joy in serving his patients, notably fellow amputees. David was known for the gift of gab, his infectious laugh, and meticulous care. In addition to building a career there, he was also an avid Duke basketball fan.
David loved nothing more than cruising the road, windows down, music blaring. He often sought out beautiful sunrises or sunsets, the closer to water, the better; he could find beauty in most anything outdoors. The simplest pleasures brought him joy: feeding the birds or deer, reading a book with a grandkid, Buckeyes football, and a phone call with one of his siblings. Christmas was David's favorite time of year, when he delivered his homemade beef stick to friends and shucked more oysters than his family could eat.
David is survived by his wife, Donette; their daughters, Annie Gentithes (George) and Casey Ball (Jon); grandchildren, Ruby, Violet, Cora, and Henry; his three siblings, John (Liz), Peter (Marcia), and Elizabeth (Joel). He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ellen Bowers.
There will be a celebration of David's life at a later date. To honor his life, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels of Durham, where David volunteered his love of the road, conversation, and Durham's local community.

Dear Donette,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy regarding your loss. I am sorry for my tardy condolence, but I just now learned of David´s death. You and he helped us so much when you cared for my sister, Suzanne, at Duke years ago.
Godspeed

I am so sorry for your loss. I live in the Five Oaks neighborhood and miss seeing David on our walks and the reliably wonderful conversations he always offered. Surprising and delightful connections we discovered: first that my name is Annie and my toddler's name is Rudy, like David's Annie and her Ruby! We later discovered that his dad was my mom's dentist in the small town of Circleville, Ohio, long ago. What an interconnected world! Rudy, my husband, and I always looked forward to seeing David on our walks, and now with another baby on the way, due in mere weeks, I know he would have delighted in the excitement of my family's news. He showed me what it can look like to be a truly wonderful neighbor, an especially welcome lesson as a new parent during the pandemic. His memory is such a blessing to me and my family. I wish your family every comfort.

Sincerely,
Annie Post

Donnette and Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathies for the loss of David, There are no words that can comfort anyone from loosing such a fine man. Myself and all that knew David grieve. He was one of my oldest Duke friends.

I loved riding with David around Lake Jordan doing car guy stuff together. The drives were how we touched base with each other. We shared deeply personal discussions about our lives and loves. It had been a while and I have been trying to hook up with him with no reply. Life is busy, I´ll try again next week.........

I hate this pandemic, it´s so hard to keep up with your friends. Finding out a good friend passed while checking the obits is the pitts.

I´m going for another ride on the next nice spring day out at Lake Jordan. David will be with me. I´ll say goodbye then.

While regularly visiting my sister and brother-in-law, David's neighbors, when both became increasingly ill last year, I began to chat with David when we saw one another in the neighborhood. He talked about loving to drive to Jordan Lake to catch a sunset, of how much he loved the area, as well as beaches, especially Topsail, and mostly he talked about his family and how proud of them he was. He was extremely supportive to me and my family. Honoring him, I extend my sympathy to his family during this difficult time. He made a positive impact to so many of our lives.

Donette, Annie, and Casey,
Earl and I were shocked and saddened to learn that David passed away. He was such a great guy. He was a devoted swim team parent. I always enjoyed talking with him at work way back in the day when there was time to talk with colleagues. He was also helpful with patients and I knew he was an excellent nurse. We are so, so sorry for your loss.

This was a shock to receive this message yesterday from a friend. David was a friend from Orthopedic clinic and a mentor to many persons facing or recovering from an amputation. His laughter, jokes and goodwill will be missed. I hope to connect with the girls and Donette. David will be missed.
