David Herman Jones M.D., died unexpectedly in his sleep at his home on Tuesday, June 24th 2008.
He was born March 28, 1934 in Smithfield to the late Ruth and D. Herman Jones. He grew up in Smithfield and graduated from Smithfield High School. Following high school, Dr. Jones attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both college and medical school, graduating from medical school in 1959. From there, Dr. Jones completed his internship in Traverse City, Michigan, followed by residencies in both psychiatry, at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and ophthalmology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Jones' medical training was interrupted between his psychiatry and ophthalmology residencies by his service as a Captain in the United States Army, in Fort Stewart, GA. Following his residency in Ann Arbor, MI, he returned to Raleigh in 1966, where he established an ophthalmology practice, which he ran until his retirement in 1988. When not at work or on call, Dr. Jones spent as much time as he could with his family and outdoors, whether hunting, fishing or working on his Johnston County farm.
David Jones is survived by his two daughters, Mary Ruth Pupa and husband, Edward R. Pupa, and Elizabeth J. Dempster and husband, Joseph B. Dempster, Jr.; by his four grandchildren, Sarah and John Pupa and Jack and Kate Dempster; by his sister, Emma J. Wall and her family; by his close companion and girlfriend of many years, Boni McBride; and by a number of his former patients, many of whom stayed in close touch with him following his retirement.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 26, 2008 from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road. An inurnment service in Smithfield will follow on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Nature Conservancy, 4705 University Dr., Suite 290, Durham, NC, 27707 or to the Wake County SPCA, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603.

I just wanted you all to know I was thinking about you. I have so many memories from spending almost 27 years down the street from your father. He always stopped to speak and was so proud of his grandchildren. He was so caring and gentle and truley must have touched hundreds and hundreds of peoples lives. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers-Jordan A. Smith and family

Dr. Jones was a really gentle man. I worked for him at the NC Medical Society where I still work and was also a patient for many years until he retired. My family has missed his guidance terribly. He was a kind and generous man. He will be missed greatly.
