I was thinking about Dawn wondering how she was doing...found this...I am heartbroken. I don“t know if anyone will see this but, fellow Buffalonian, I worked with her at Duke Raleigh Hospital and had the opportunity to love her for a short time. I know she is missed. My heart goes out to her family.

Dawn was one of the best people I've ever had the privilege of calling a friend. Our boys played football together at Green Hope and I remember sitting at the practices off to the side by myself because I didn't know anyone and I felt a little awkward. One day, this beautiful, smiling woman started climbing up the bleachers toward me and I was never alone again :) She remains in my heart and I will be forever grateful for her friendship.

I will never forget the first time both my son and daughter referred to "Mama Nagel". Her caring personality make everyone feel like she was their mom. Well now she will forever be their guardian angel. Our new family slogan is "Fight Like Mama Nagel! (loosely translates to "NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT!") We are so sorry for your loss, she was an inspiration to all who were graced with her presence.

You said I gave you hope and laughter. We laughed through tears as you guided me through the healthcare Maze in caring for my husband. You said you kept my texts and listened to them over and over and you smiled. You were on my mind almost every day. I will miss you. You're a special, sweet soul. You amazed me at Kenny's funeral just a few weeks ago when you insisted I should have a chair for my comfort when indeed it was also you who needed that comfort. Back at the church you insisted that I be fed. As sick as you were you were concerned about the needs of another. I will miss you. I will miss our chats. You were an angel while you were here. So fly to the arms of your heavenly father. There you will find peace and comfort and soon you will burst with happiness as you wait for all of us who love you.I will be at your mass tomorrow to gather with my cousins to remember what the world has lost. Godspeed sweet girl. Godspeed. Love continues to you, Heather

Dawn always treated her patients with tenderness and dignity. As we walked through the hospital together, she knew all the staff (everyone!) and everyone knew her. I asked her once, how is that you know everyone, you've only been here a short time? She just shrugged and smiled. But I think I know why, it was because every person was truly valued by Dawn. Her heart was just that big. But always, at the center of her heart was her precious family. You were always in her thoughts, always her greatest care. May you all be comforted by His presence during this great loss.

Dawn lit up every room that she entered with her incredible smile, adorable laugh and bubbly personality. She was a fighter threw her breast cancer battle. I was amazed at her strength and courage. She always put her family first and always had a hug and lending hand available for any friend in need. The best team mom and friend I have ever known. I will miss her dearly! Your spirit will always live on! God Bless you and your family!

I live in Lititz, PA, but met Dawn and her family when visiting my brother and his wife (Dan and Anne Smith) in NC. She was so interested in meeting my son, Matthew, who has multiple disabilities...and was so welcoming and kind to him. What a fun and caring person!
