Dean Garland, 93, died at her home on November 11, 2011. She was born on February 16, 1918 in Johnson City, TN to the late Arthur and Minnie Cloyd. Dean is survived by her son Michael Garland of Richmond, VA and daughters Ann Praigg of Durham and Alice Garland of Raleigh as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Susan Bardin and her brother and three sisters.
In her early years, Dean was very active in the Girl Scouts including representing the state of Tennessee at the Girl Scouts Silver Jubilee Encampment held at Camp Edith Macy in Briarcliff Manor, NY in 1937. This was the first international gathering of Girl Scouts in the US (the celebration was supposed to have been in Switzerland but the threat of war caused a change of plans). She then
participated in Silver Jubilee Reunions held in London, England, and at several locations around the US including one she helped organize in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Dean loved to help those in her community through service such as volunteering at the North Carolina Museum of History, Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen, Meals-on-Wheels, Red Cross blood program and her church, Millbrook United Methodist Church.
Dean enjoyed life and the many wonderful friendships she experienced. Family members would like to thank her church family and all of her devoted friends for their many acts of loving kindness given to Dean during her life and especially during her final days. Dean's life will be celebrated at a private family gathering and her remains will rest in her church's columbarium. Her many friends and acquaintances are urged to keep her spirit alive through active community service and positive, cheerful
relationships with others. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to the Respite Program, Millbrook United Methodist Church, 1712 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609 or Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
