Dennis Thurman Obituary
August 21, 1942 - February 14, 2024
Cary, North Carolina - William "Dennis" Thurman of Cary, NC passed away on February 14, 2024 and is survived by Robin Thurman, his wife of 54 years, brother, Lindell Thurman, son, Colin Thurman, daughter, Jennifer Thurman, daughter-in-law, Dawn Thurman and grandchildren, Henry and Abigail.
Dennis was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Iva Dell and Cordell Thurman and graduated with a Masters degree in Education-Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri in Columbia. He had a long and and well traveled career in teaching and education for the visually impaired. Dennis worked as a teacher at the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston and later took promotions to positions in Nova Scotia, Canada and South Carolina. Dennis was appointed to the position of Superintendent at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, IA in 1987 until 2005 and completed his career as Superintendent at the Governor Morehead School in Raleigh, NC. In his career, Dennis was passionate about the kids he served and encouraged those around him to be successful. At home, and with his friends and family, he had many passions, was an avid reader, loved music, a variety of foods and travel. He was a student of history and a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan.
His absence is already felt. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Dennis was 81 years old when he passed.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 - 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27607 in the Social Hall.

Dennis was an outstanding administrator of programs for blind children. I had the good fortune to work with him on research and leadership projects in the 80s and 90s and 00s. I admired his dedication and also his sense of fun. He was a valued colleague and his work improved the lives for many children with visual impairments.
