Maryanna, I was saddened to hear that Ed's galant fight with cancer had finally come to an end. I did not know him as well as some, but I was greatly impressed with his interest in and knowledge,of history. I also thank you for including us at his birthday celebration last year, it gave me a chance to know him even better. The world is not a just place,It is just a place,It was just a better place , when Ed was here.Sincerely, Tim Veise

I am sad that Ed is no longer with us, but am grateful for the time in recent months that I got to spend with you, Mary Anna, and Ed in Beaufort and Morehead City. Despite his pain and discomfort, he was a pleasure to be with and always seemed to enjoy company and spirited conversation. I've always enjoyed his company dating back to the RT days. You and your family are in my thoughts, and I will see you next Sunday in Raleigh.

Ed and I worked together on the copy desk at The News & Observer in Raleigh. I didn't he was ill and regret he had so short a time to enjoy retirement. Ed was a fine fellow, well-read with a subtle sense of humor, and an ace journalist. May he rest in peace.

I was sad and shocked to see Ed's obituary, not having even known he was ailing. What a thoroughly decent, understated, erudite man--the kind I hope they're still making, somewhere. MaryAnna and all, you have my sympathy and I'll hope to see you at the memorial.
