Edwina Zagami Obituary

Edwina Zagami
December 4, 1947 - December 1, 2021
Pittsboro, North Carolina - Edwina Ann Zagami, age 73, of Chapel Hill, died Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at home. Edwina was born in Staten Island, New York on December 4, 1947, to the late Natale "Roy" Zagami and Mary Cameron Zagami. Roy was a Lt. Colonel in the Army. The family moved throughout the US and was stationed in Germany when Edwina was young. Mary was a North Carolina native who joined the Navy as a Nurse in World War II and spent her career as a RN. If you asked Edwina where she was from, she would say nowhere, but she made North Carolina her home for the past 35 years. Following her mother's career choice, Edwina was a Registered Nurse and held bachelor's degrees in Social Work and Nursing and a Master's in Counseling. She spent the majority of her career as a School Nurse for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. She is remembered by her peers as a fierce advocate for doing what she believed was best for the students. She helped to pioneer the role within the school system. She embraced it as a public health servant and her care for the community extended beyond the school building walls. She is remembered by her peers as an educator and mentor. She will be remembered by her friends and family for her exuberant and joyful laugh, her strong sense of purpose, and endless energy. She held herself and those she loved to a high standard of excellence and was always one to jump in and help anyone who needed it. She loved animals. Her dogs were her loyal companions and she participated in agility and fly ball competitions with them on weekends. She was an exceptional grandmother to her three granddaughters, a dedicated caregiver and always engaged in teaching and raising them. Surviving relatives include her three children, Sarah McWay Boling and husband Daniel Boling of Hillsborough, NC, Dr. Mike McWay and wife Alexandra Janelli of Philadelphia, PA, and Mary McWay and wife Dr. Ashley Gray of Pittsboro, NC; her two brothers, Ken Zagami and wife Jackie of Naples, Florida, and Dr. Richard France and wife Dr. Elisabeth Frishauf of New York, NY; and her three grandchildren, Ellen Boling, Cora Boling, and Leighton McWay. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas More Church in Chapel Hill on 12/13/21 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice or the English Springer Rescue America, Inc. 1025 Rose Creek Drive, Suite 620-305 Woodstock, GA 30189 Condolences may be made at www.donaldsonfunerals.com Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the Zagami family.

I never knew your birthday or any of your special holidays, so I thought I'd send a valentine, like in elementary school.
Happy Valentines day ... old friend

I'm heartsick upon learning of her passing. I "met" your mother/ grandmother online while researching material for my book. We spoke scores of times over the last decade on many topics. Like Edwina's mother, mine was a Navy nurse during WWII. Although I didn't pursue a career in medicine, my daughter did, and is a nurse practitioner. I regret I never met her in person. I wish her eternal peace and you all, the joy of her memory.
