Eric Eycke Obituary

Eric Rawnsley Eycke

February 22, 1962 - September 22, 2017

Raleigh

It is with a broken heart that Carl and Mary Lou Eycke announce the death of their son.

Eric was born in Burlington, Vermont. He left his heart in that State when the family moved to Raleigh in 1967. He was known as "the man who reads all the time" among the friends with whom he recently lived. Eric was a man of diverse interests. He hungered to live the simple life that Eustace Conway promoted, and admired the American Indians for their respect of the natural world. Eric had a scholar's knowledge of the Civil War. He dreamed of being an interpretive ranger at the Gettysburg Battleground. He was the lead singer for the "Corrosion of Conformity" band and generously applauded Elvis Presley. He was a strong fan of the Boston Red Sox and a dare-devil skateboarder.

Eric's occupations throughout his life included managing "Endless Grind" skateboard shop, being a waiter at Sadlack's Restaurant and working for various construction companies.

Eric will be remembered for his beautiful mind, his wit, his creative flair, his endearing smile, his curiosity, his love of music, his strength of character and his sense of justice.

A celebration of Eric's life will be held on Thursday, October 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Raleigh Rose Garden, 301 Pogue Street.

In addition to his parents, Eric is survived by a brother, Phillip Eycke and his wife Janice; an aunt, Virginia Rawnsley Fenton, and many cousins.

Donations in his honor may be made to The Church in the Woods, 4701 Forestdale Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27603, or to Pullen Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27605 (write "Thursday Roundtable" in the memo line).

Eric's vitality was what drew me to get to know him, in the late '80's when we were both orbiting the same people and places in Raleigh. It was his generosity of self and spirit that told me he wasn't one of the superficial acquaintances so many of us made in those days.

How can the death of someone you haven't spoken to in 30 years hit you so hard? When it's a light that's gone out too soon. You'll not be forgotten, brother.

"The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly...".

I've known Eric since our school days at NBHS. He was always so fierce in his approach to school, skateboarding and music, which encouraged me to play bass. I'll never forget his riding that skateboard through the halls (and even some stairs!)at school. Once, at a bar, I was getting hassled on my way home. Eric noticed and was such a gentleman he offered to walk me the few blocks I needed to return safely. I'm glad I got the chance to know him and grieve the loss of the bright, gentle, clever man he became.

I was so saddened to learn of Eric's passing. All the Cameron Park kids looked up to Eric, for the right reasons. Just touching a football now drops a coin in my mind's Nickelodeon, transporting me back to when the neighborhood children would all slip out of our coats to play a game of scrimmage in the wet Raleigh snow. Eric, cooler than the cuffs of our icy jeans, features prominently in so many of my, and I'm sure every Cameron Park kid's, fondest childhood memories. We watched Eric grow up. We witnessed his many successes. We saw him fall in love, many times over. And now, with broken and suffering hearts, we learn of his passing. People say growing up is hard to do, but watching the friends you grew up with and loved pass on is pretty damn hard too. Much love and peace to Eric's family and loved ones. May he live in our hearts forever.

When I met Eric, I was nine years old, and he was eight. He was an amazing person with a beautiful heart and a keen mind. He was a good friend, and I loved him very much.

We all knew Eric in a different way, yet if we added all of our memories and versions of him together I doubt we could even begin to scratch the surface of him.

I knew him first as the little squirt I used to babysit, who asked endless questions, played classic little boy tricks on me, and was filled with good humor and affection. We both loved books and escaped in them, a habit Eric kept his whole life. He was a part of our world for all of the Mungers, the boy who lived across the street and was so familiar to us. We all cared about him a great deal. He was and is an important part of our childhoods, who returned when we were adults in unexpected ways.

I'll never forget the time I ran into him at a punk rock show at The Station in Carrboro soon after I got out of college. Eric asked me to dance -- and then insisted on headbanging against the wall of the room to the music. I was both appalled and impressed.

Godspeed, Eric. We will remember you always. I hope you've ended up somewhere where you are surrounded by books and are aware that you were, indeed, loved.

Mary Lou, if you are reading this: much love to you and Carl. I know your hearts are broken. Please know that we are thinking of you both at this saddest of times.

Eric cared a lot about David Zumwalt - he still talked about him in recent years. That's revealing of something essential in Eric's character that I'll always remember. Also, Eric Eycke was the greatest ultimate frisbee player Cameron Park ever produced...and that's saying something. Godspeed.
