Frances Woodard Obituary

OCTOBER 7, 1916 - JULY 24, 2006
Frances Woodard died at her home in the Windsor Pointe retirement community in Fuquay-Varina on Monday. Previously, she had lived in Selma since 1940, where she met her husband of 63 years, James C. "Jimmy" Woodard.
Born in Kinston, NC to Kirby and Bessie Pittman, Frances graduated from Grainger High School as Valedictorian, and from Meredith College where she was president of her senior class. She became a high school English teacher, and later earned her Masters degree from UNC Chapel Hill. She thentaught English Literature at Atlantic Christian College and at Meredith College. In 1993, Frances was honored by Meredith as a distinguished graduate.
Frances was predeceased by husband, Jimmy in May 2004.
Survivors include: her son, JamesC. Woodard, Jr. and wife, Lanie of Clayton; her daughter, Jane T. Woodard of Garner; grandchildren, Kirby Woodard and wife,Lisa of Fuquay-Varina, Caroline Cook and husband, Travis of Fuquay-Varina; one great-grandchild, Jimmy Cook; brother, Dr. Woodrow Pittman and wife, Rachael of Ahoskie.
Frances will be remembered as a wonderful teacher and humanitarian, loving wife, sister, mother and grandmother. Books were among her greatest treasures.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your library of choice or to Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 487, Selma, NC 27576.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church, 401 W. Anderson St., in Selma. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
