I met George in the early 80s when I joined the flute section of the Raleigh Community Band. I remember him as a kind gentleman who made me feel welcome and also soon managed to recruit me into the Chamber Music Guild. He was a modest man; I had no idea of his many accomplishments until reading his obituary. But there was something special about him that makes him memorable, 40 years later. I am sorry for your loss.

George and Karin were beloved NC Symphony patrons for many years. I have had the honor of sitting in the Mr. and Mrs. George Stephens principal flute chair for 35 years. For about 25 of those years, our flute section looked forward to Saturday night concerts, when we would wave our flutes toward George and Karin in the upper right box where they sat. Rest In Peace, dear friend.
