Glenn Alfred Eason

Glenn Alfred Eason, 83, of Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh died April 2. The son of the late Albert and Martha Eason, he was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Johnston County, North Carolina.

Eason graduated in 1949 from Selma High School, where he was senior class president, editor of the school annual and a member of the football team. He maintained friendships with high school classmates and other alumni as a member of the Good Old Boys and Girls Club.

He earned a bachelor's degree with honors in 1953, and master's degree, 1958, both in civil engineering from N.C. State University. As a student, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon, Blue Key Honor Society, Sigma Xi, ROTC, Engineers Council, and he participated in intramural sports. He also was student chapter president, American Society of Civil Engineers; and president of the Baptist Student Union.

Eason served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in Korea, 13th Engineer Combat Battalion with the 7th Division, 1953-55. He was a platoon leader, Combat Engineers; Engineer Intelligence Officer and earned a Medal of Commendation.

He was an instructor at N.C. State University in engineering mechanics, 1955-58. His graduate work involved, "The Effects of Shear on the Plastic Design of Steel Beams."

In his professional career, Eason worked for various engineering and architectural firms, 1955-1971, and established his own engineering firm in 1971 in Durham, retiring in 1995. He was included in Who's Who in Engineering, 1988; Personalities of the South, 1986; and Men of Achievement, 1986.

Glenn Eason is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Perry Eason of the home; daughter, Natalie Eason Hampton and husband Kyle of Raleigh; son, John Perry Eason and wife Barbara of Timberlake; granddaughters, Allison Hampton of Washington, D.C., and Caroline Hampton of Valle Crucis, and grandson, John M. Eason, U.S. Marine Corps, Camp Lejeune; sister, Marlene Phillips and husband Harold of Victoria, TX; three nieces and their families.

Eason and wife Peggy moved from Durham to Springmoor in 2005, where he was involved in a number of activities. He also was a member of Raleigh's Pullen Memorial Baptist Church.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Springmoor Retirement Center, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, Monday, 11 a.m. A graveside service will be in at Selma Memorial Gardens, Selma, 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive friends before the Sunday service at 1:30 p.m., Parrish Funeral Home, 1351 S. Pollock St., Selma.

The family thanks caregivers at the Stevens Health Center, in the home at Springmoor and with Hospice of Wake County for their care of Glenn Eason in the past year.

Flowers are welcome, and memorials may be made to Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615, and to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Peggy and family; I was saddened to hear of Glenn's death. Though I didn't know him, I knew you and will think of you in days to come. May God comfort each of you.
