She was the best Mother-in-law I ever had. 50 years. She always laughed at my jokes. I think back at all I did for her and it was like - changing batteries in a flashlight, setting the clocks back (or forward), or changing a light bulb.
And for all of that I got pot roast with carrots, potatoes and onions. with a few casseroles (squash, chicken, broccoli, asparagus, and sweet potato), corn pudding, marsh-mellow salad and a glass of SWEET tea. Then pecan pie, lemon bars, chocolate éclair and home-made peach ice cream. If I got hungry, I could get biscuits and lemon pie at Evelyns.
She couldnt have enough people over to eat or to stay the night. She could always put another nail on the wall for one more person.
I loved the stories about the home place, David and Eugenia, sisters and brothers, puttin in tobacco, taking the buggy up the country, driving to the beach in an old truck and tales of around the Hollowell dinner table. She had stories about her girls, too.. like teaching them how to use a little elbow grease to get something clean.
Wherever she went, she was always the last one to leave. For ninety nine years, I think she enjoyed her stay. I think she wanted to be THE LAST one to leave. I love you, Grandma.
