J. Reznick Obituary

J. Steven Reznick

May 27, 1951 - July 5, 2016

Durham

J. Steven Reznick passed away after living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for three years. He faced this adversity with grace, courage and generosity and worked diligently on ALS research and fundraising/advocacy endeavors. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC in 1951, the son of Joseph and Jeanne Tavss Reznick. He attended R.J. Reynolds High School and UNC Chapel Hill before obtaining his MA from Wake Forest University and his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Steve is survived by his devoted wife Donna Kaye who gave him great joy throughout their short but loving marriage and who was by his side with extraordinary patience and support. Steve leaves behind his wonderful daughter Leah Tyner, who he was thrilled to walk down the aisle in marriage to Jon Tyner of Knightdale, NC. He is also survived by his father Joseph Reznick of Virginia Beach, VA, his stepson Aaron Kaye of Washington D.C., sisters and brothers-in-law Celia and Larry Brown of White Plains, N.Y., and Barbara and Keith Bernstein of Birmingham, AL as well as his many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Steve entered the world of work at age 13 as a clerk in his parents' retail business, Reznick's Music and Jewelry, with strong attachment to the slogan: "It's been Reznicks for Records for Years." Music remained a passion throughout his life. Steve launched his academic career as Research Director of the Harvard Infant Study, working on studies of early temperament. He then spent 11 years as an Assistant and Associate Professor at Yale University with research and teaching focused on infant cognitive development. Steve returned to Chapel Hill in 1998 as a Professor in the Department of Psychology at UNC and spent almost two decades as an exemplary citizen of the Carolina academic community, for which he was awarded multiple honors including: The C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the Order of the Golden Fleece and the J. Steven Reznick Award for Psychological Research that Enhances Diversity.

Steve's primary scientific contributions were in the domain of infant cognitive development. He also studied nutrition, autism spectrum disorder and other developmental challenges.  He was the author or co-author of seven books (one which will be published posthumously) and a key developer of two widely-used and impactful scientific assessment tools such as: The MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory, currently the most widely used child language assessment tool in the world; and The First Year Inventory, a parent-report instrument used to identify infants who are at risk for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Steve founded the Cognitive Development Society and he held governance positions in the International Society for Infant Studies and the Society for Research in Child Development.

His reputation for creativity, fairness, sense of humor and boundless energy made Steve a valuable leader in the administrative posts he held such as Director of the Program in Developmental Psychology, Associate Dean for First Year Seminars and Academic Experiences and the Howard Hughes (MI) Science Seminar where he instituted many innovations to better serve students at Carolina.

Never an "all work and no play" sort of person, Steve enjoyed warm and intimate relationships with his family and long-time friends. He took great joy in keeping in touch with many of his former students and colleagues and was known to send each of them an annual birthday email. His main definition of "play" was playing harmonica and tennis. His passion for tennis led to a decade long tenure as President of the UNC Faculty-Staff Recreation Association, commonly known as The Farm.

In order to honor Steve's lifelong commitment to education, research and Carolina, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the J. Steven Reznick Diversity and Psychological Research Fund.  This Fund will encourage and honor undergraduate students who conduct exemplary research on topics of concern to diverse groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in psychological research. Finally, in keeping with Steve's favorite mantra: "Go Heels!"

Steve hired me at the Kagan Laboratory at Harvard University during the 1980s where we worked closely together to transition the grant writing and publication efforts from analog to personal computing digital. I handled the first email account for Dr. Jerome Kagan and FTPed Manuscripts to collaborate author as well ad coding during test battery data collections & providing general administrative support to Kagan.

Steve was technically very savvy in nascent age and a Joy to work with ... he was essential to Kagan and the lab's success. It breaks my heart he passed away so young.

Steve was my undergraduate advisory and mentor at Yale, where I worked in his lab and completed my senior thesis. He was generous with his time, his thoughts, and was my first example of what it means to be an academic & researcher. At every conference I attend, I meet fellow psychologists who have also been mentored by him, demonstrating his lasting and continued impact on the field of development cognitive science. His contributions will be missed, but he has created an enduring professional legacy of new scholars.

Sorry I never got to know Steve, but my Mom told me how nice she thought he was. When they met she said he was attentive and made her feel special when walking with her at her pace. From reading the other memories it seems like Steve was the special one. Our thoughts are with you and Aaron and all the family.

Love to the Reznick family from your forever next door neighbor Marilyn.
Steve was someone I looked up to as a child and as an adult. My son Wade lives in our family home on Oaklawn and I was there when I heard the news of Steve. I had just been walking around our yard, looking over to what I will always refer to as The Reznick's and thinking about what a wonderful childhood and growing up we all shared. Steve was a huge part of that as he was usually running the show! My parents loved the Reznick kids and Steve was the witness to their Will. Daddy picked Steve to sign along with himself and Mama. That pretty much says how we feel about this family.

Love to you all, Mr. Reznick, Cel, Barbara and to you Steve. You made a huge difference in a lot of people's lives, including mine.

We had the privilege of knowing Steve for the four short years he was married to our daughter Donna. During this time we got to love and respect him. He accomplished so much in his lifetime and touched many peoples lives. He can be proud of how he handled his horrible disease and died with dignity

Steve was my first real mentor at Yale, and made a lifelong difference in the way I teach, research, help others and live life with love and respect for everyone. A model psychologist, and human bean.

I grew up with Steve. His family's house was located behind ours. He was the cool big brother to my friend Barbara and he was always hanging out with another cool dude Joe Young. He was the neighborhood's older kid so he was often too busy to hang with the little kids. Steve was someone I always felt at ease with and he was always kind to me. I was able to keep in touch with him through Facebook and we kept in touch with old neighborhood updates. He fought a hard battle with ALS but through it all he kept his positive outlook! My condolences to his dad Joe, his wife Donna as well as his sisters Celia, and Barbara.

I remember meeting Steve once to learn more about his research on young kids with autism. It was a lively conversation which included lots of questions, research, videoclips, and more questions. Since he had worked with my former advisors in speech-language pathology, I was intrigued by his work in psychology. I am so sorry to hear that he had to deal with ALS for the last 3 years, and admire the courage, grace, and passion with which he taught others, despite his illness. Being inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, is such a special and well-deserved honor. Having watched the video of Steve's induction, I encourage everyone to watch it. Congratulations to Leah and Jon, may you have many happy years together! My thoughts and prayers reach out to both of you, Donna, and all of your family. Such an outstanding star will be sorely missed, but he will shine from above forever! Sarah Roehrich

Steve was my neighbor when we were children and he's been my friend for almost my entire life. He will be missed not only for what he did but who he was. Now when I quote some of his funny quips, they'll be spoken through tears. Our hearts hurt for his dad, Donna and Leah, Cel and Barbara and their families, and the many people who called Steve their friend. May his memory be for a blessing.

My name is Sue Gallos Teleoglou and I grew up with Steve in Winston Salem. He was always such a kind and friendly person and it was such fun to go to Reznicks, see Steve and be able toplay a 45. In spite of the nasty ALS it seems like Steve had a wonderful life. Steve must have touched so very many lives and will surely be mourned by you all.
