Jacob Fishel Obituary
Jacob Stanley Fishel, of Glenaire Retirement Community, Cary, N.C., died Sunday, May 1, 2005. A memorial service will be held at Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at 11 a.m.
Mr. Fishel was born in Winston-Salem on March 3, 1920 to Bernard Francis Fishel and Beatrice Wall Fishel. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1938 and attended Tennessee Military Institute of Business Administration and later NC State College earning his Architectural Engineering degree in 1950. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, spending nine months as a Prisoner of War in Germany, being liberated by Russiantroops in 1945. He was separated from the Air Corps with the rank of Captain. He spent his professional career practicing architecture. He was President of the Raleigh Section, NC Chapter, AIA in 1967. In 1973, he was President of the Raleigh/DurhamChapter of the Construction Specification Institute. From 1963 until his retirement in 1989, he was a partner in the architectural firm of Fishel and Taylor.
Mr. Fishel was a long time member of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club, serving as President in 1966. He was also President of the Raleigh Civic Council in 1966. He was President of the Raleigh Boy's Club during 1970 -71. He was a director on the Board of the Cerebral Palsy Rehab Center from 1971-77, serving as President in 1976. After his retirement, he enjoyed being a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Fishel was a charter member of Raleigh Moravian Church and served in many capacities including Board of Elders, Sacristan, Adult Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Long Range Planning and Building Committees.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley (to whom he was married for 62 years); a son, William Stanley Fishel and his wife, Pamela, of Cary; a daughter, Susan, and her husband, James I. Owens of Raleigh, and one grandson, James Stanley Owens.
Visitation will be held immediately following the memorial service at Raleigh Moravian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, Raleigh Moravian Church, Glenaire Resident's Fund, or a charity of one's choice.
