James Betts Obituary

James Wallace Betts, 88 of Buies Creek died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at WakeMed of Raleigh after a brief illness. A native of Harnett County, Mr. Betts was born on February 28, 1921, the son of James Tyson and Willie Norma Wallace Betts and was a graduate of Buies Creek High School and Campbell University. Mr. Betts was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and was past president and member of the Buies Creek Lions Club. Mr. Betts taught at Buies Creek High School, was an accountant and avid gardener. He was a published author, poet and enjoyed reading and music throughout his lifetime. He was preceded in death by Mary Helen Dean Betts, his wife of 55 years. Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Memorial Baptist Church, Buies Creek. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Internment will be private In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, PO Box 485, Buies Creek, NC 27506 or to Hospice of Harnett County, PO Box 373, Erwin, NC 28339. Survivors: wife, Eleanor McComb Betts; daughters, Elaine Betts McCollum and her husband, Bob of Franklin Kathy Betts Frank and her husband, Jim of Orlando, FL grandchildren, Meredith Everett Tingen and husband, Michael of Burlington, Kaley Frank Swyers and husband, Ryan of Lake Mary, FL, Nathan Frank of Orlando, FL; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Cameron Tingen of Burlington; sister, Janell Betts Hockaday and husband, Stuart of Burlington; brother, Eston Betts and wife, Jane of Durham Funeral arrangements entrusted to O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.
