I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Hayward. He was the main reason I chose UNC to do my neurology residency. He was so nurturing of his residents and I can't imagine a better teacher. He was greatly admired by his colleagues and patients. I loved his sense of humor too. He truly was a great man with so many attributes that the world will not be the same without him . My condolences to his family.

The shorebirds and wild ponies of Taylor's Creek and Carrot Island have lost a quiet friend and observer.

You will be missed by so many, for so many different reasons. If any of us are able to live a life only a fraction as full as yours, we should consider ourselves to have been very fortunate indeed.

Here's to everlasting orange sunsets and a glass of Chardonnay, Jim. You were dearly loved and you are most definitely missed.

My condolences to the family of Dr. James Hayward. I had the honor of being one of his neurology residents at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was my mentor, unmatched source of knowledge, and an exceptional human being. In his passing we are losing caring physician, skilled teacher, and a renaissance man.

A great tree has fallen in the forest.

Jim's generosity, kindness, and encouragement will always live on within us. We offer our sincere condolences to family, friends, and students.

"Shelter him in a place of brightness, a place of verdure, a place of repose; whence all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away; and the sight of thy countenance rejoiceth all thy Saints from all the ages."

Rocky,
You were the best dad and grandfather a daughter could have wished for, curious, generous and honest. Your natural curiosity inspired me to be come a scientist. We will miss you and will carry our memories of wonderful times on the dock and fishing with you. Love you always, Linda, Ken, Dagan and Neal Hayward-Marx

Goodbye dad. We will cherish our memories of your presence, wit, and constant tirades against injustice, whether on the basketball courts of the Bruins or TarHeels, or drawn from the daily news!
Love, John, Patty and Jillian.

Sincere condolences to the family. Dr. Hayward was my Attending-on Call one night when I was a fairly new senior resident at UNC-CH. He was supportive, and complimented my emergency consultation note of the evening, which meant a lot to me.

Rocky, you are now resting peacefully. Your life was very full, you touched and taught many children (your own and others), residents and colleagues. And of course, everything has a date, location and is carefully listed somewhere. Love Jean, Jim, Greg, Nick and Chris.

My sincerest condolences to the family. Jim had a profound impact on my life during the years he led the Department of Neurology in Chapel Hill. He set the pace in all aspects of academic neurology for those of us fortunate enough to be there during those years. Outsponen, honest and funny, Jim was an outstanding neuroscientist, charismatic teacher and compassionate physician .... and a constant friend. I am very grateful to have known him.
