James Edward Ramsey, 81, of 170 Newell Dr., Roxboro, died Thursday, May 2, 2013. Born in Person County, Mr. Ramsey was the son of the late John Talmadge and Otey Wilkins Ramsey. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Ramsey served in the US Marines Corp stationed in Hawaii. He retired as Captain and was honorably discharged in 1960.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School. He founded his law practice in 1958, and he practiced law until his death. He served in the North Carolina General Assembly and was Speaker of the House from 1973 until 1975.
He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2012.
Mr. Ramsey was preceded in death by a grandchild, Erin Squires Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey is survived by his wife, Eunice Saunders Ramsey; four children, Frank Talmadge Ramsey, of Durham, Linda Hart Ramsey and David Clark Ramsey and wife Julie, all of Roxboro; and Carl Wilkins Ramsey and wife Jodie of Puyallup, WA; one brother, Robert T. Ramsey, of Roxboro; seven grandchildren, Stacy Renee Ramsey, John Thomas Ramsey, Michael James Ramsey, Lisa Hart Sanders, Alexander Harris Ramsey, Adam Saunders Ramsey and Jordan Clark Ramsey.
Memorial services will be held 3PM, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Pam Watkins and Chief District Court Judge Mark E. Galloway. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-3PM Sunday, prior to the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Judicial District 9A Bar.
