Joann Hocutt Obituary

Joann Barbara
Mendenhall Hocutt
Knightdale
Joann Barbara Mendenhall Hocutt, 79, of 121 Daniel Circle, passed away February 12, 2011 at Wake Med, surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Austin Franklin Mendenhall and Ida Olivia Foltz, Joann grew up in the Friedberg community of Davidson County, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Francis, Wilburn, Margaret and Rachel.
While attending nursing school in Winston Salem, NC, Joann met and married her husband of 58 years, Wilford Hocutt, who preceded her in death on June 27, 2010. Joann began her career at Mary Elizabeth Hospital, and then worked at Rex Hospital, retiring in 1995 after over 40 years working primarily as a night duty nurse with OB/GYN patients.
Wilford and Joann had a lifelong love of the North Carolina coast and kept a vacation home in the Emerald Isle area for many years. While Wilford enjoyed spending his days with a fishing rod in his hands, Joann's joy was visiting the local shops, where she was well-known by all the shop owners.
Joann was confirmed in the Christian faith at the age of 12 at Friedberg Moravian Church. After her marriage, she joined her husband in the Baptist faith. In 1970, Wilford and Joann became charter members of Green Pines Baptist Church, where they both served faithfully until they became limited by their failing health. Although Joann was a Baptist for the duration of her marriage, her heart always remained with her Moravian upbringing.
Joann leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Marsha Duke and husband, Bob of Raleigh and Crystal Duty and husband, Jesse of Zebulon; grandchildren, Austin Duke and wife, Amanda of Nashville, TN, Casey Duke of Durham; sisters-in-law, Katy Mendenhall of Rural Hall, Katie Holleman of Knightdale, Eva Hocutt of Zebulon.
Funeral service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday February 16, 2011, at Green Pines Baptist Church, 1498 Hodge Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.
Burial will be at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery, 13450 NC Hwy, 96, Zebulon, NC 27597.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545, and other times at the family home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association 514 Daniels Street, Suite 109, Raleigh, NC 27605.
A special thanks to Katie Holleman and Joe Holleman for the devotion they have shown Joann. Also, the family wishes to sincerely thank the special caregivers who assisted her during her last months at home.

I am Gloria Young and I attend Green Pines Baptist Church. I have been a member since July 2009. I never had a chance to meet Ms. Joann or Mr. Wilford but I felt like I knew them both thru the prayers we all have prayed for them and their family. I have been sending them cards from the Cornerstones Senior Adult Ministry for the last couple of years. She and Mr. Wilford were not forgotten by the Seniors of Green Pines. Knowing that they are together again gives peace and that you all will see them again. Just know the thoughts and prayers of the Cornerstones Senior Ministry are with you all. God Bless each of you.
