John Bullock Obituary

John Henry Bullock, Sr., age 87, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Penny Holland Bullock, in 1990. He was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Smithfield. Mr. Bullock was a retired businessman who located to Johnston County and began his first business in 1948. He was involved in different facets of the logging and sawmilling industries. He officially retired from the logging profession in 1988. Mr. Bullock is a past-president of both Kiwanis International and Civitan International Clubs in Smithfield. In retirement he enjoyed volunteering his time for both clubs. Mr. Bullock was on active duty with the United States Marine Corps from 1940 – 1948. He had the honor of being assigned to the White House twice during his career. During World War II he was assigned to the U.S.S. Iowa. While serving two years in the Central and South Pacific, he was engaged in 12 major assaults of different islands. He was always proud of his Marine Corps experience and received many medals and ribbons while obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM at the First Christian Church on Crescent Drive in Smithfield. Burial will follow with military honors in Hills of the Neuse Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield Saturday from 6 to 8 PM. He is survived by his children, son, John H. Bullock, Jr. and wife Rebecca Flowers, daughter, Gay Daughtry and husband Walter, son, W. Landis Bullock and wife Paula; daughter, Ann Bullock; his very dear and devoted friend of 19 years, Clarice Pittman Barbour; a brother, Marvin Bullock of Laurinburg; a sister, Barbara Jean Haddock of Greenville; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two sons from a previous marriage living in Texas and Arkansas. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at First Christian Church, 1001 S. Crescent Drive, Smithfield, NC 27577.
