John Nolan Obituary
JUNE 15, 1927 - DEC. 6, 2005
Col. John J. Nolan (Retired, USAF) died peacefully at home on December 6, after a long, brave battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife Rose; four children, Michael, Patti Bryce, Patrick, and Joseph. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Julie Bryce, Holly Bryce, Amy Bryce, Casey Nolan, Molly Nolan, and John Steven Nolan, (baptized December 3, 2005). John is the eldest brother of Mary (Sr. Jeanine), Augustine, Francis (Bro. Bernard Xavier), Peter (Kieran Nolan, OSB), Matthew, and Rita (Mrs. Gene Olsson).
He is preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Gerard Nolan, and son-in-law, John Conway Bryce.
Col. Nolan served in the United States Air Force both in the United States and in assignments overseas. He was stationed in Vietnam for a yearbefore returning to Washington, D.C. to work in the Pentagon as a Chief Information Officer for the Air Force. He later wasappointed Strategic Planner. He also took on teaching and lecturing duties at various times in his military career, as well as speech writing for administrative officials.
After retiring from the military he participated in several business enterprises. He was one of the founders of a company dedicated to improving environmental conditions by collecting and recycling oils, lubricants, and solvents. He wrote extensively and authored a book and legislation that govern present recycling policies.
Col. Nolan was active in social and economic mercy ministries in the Raleigh area, through his parish. He was loved and cherished for his patience, humility and wit, respected and esteemed for his intelligence, wisdom, and tremendous life experience. His faith in Christ guided his life and gave peace to his death. Those who knew him, loved him. And will always be grateful to have been loved by him.
On Friday, December 9, at 7 p.m. the family will greet friends at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on January 27, at 11 a.m.
