John Tarantino Obituary

John P. Tarantino Jr., 68, passed away on April 23, 2025, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Born on January 15, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John lived a life deeply rooted in music, military service, and community activism.

After graduating from Penn Hills Senior High School in 1975, John earned a Music Education degree from Edinboro University. He taught choral music in elementary and middle schools and provided private classical guitar lessons to students of all ages. His love for music extended beyond the classroom-he was an accomplished guitarist and an avid barbershop quartet singer, often performing alongside his brothers.

John served honorably in the U.S. Army and later with the North Carolina Army National Guard. As a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard Band, he traveled throughout the state performing for communities and representing the spirit of service through music.

John remained active in causes close to his heart and engaged deeply in political activism. His commitment to community extended into roles as a mediator and community activist. He was also a devoted supporter of animal rescue organizations and personally adopted many dogs throughout his life.

John cherished meaningful friendships that spanned decades-from high school bandmates to college peers-and maintained close ties with fellow musicians and mentors. One such enduring relationship was with Dr. Cliff Cox, his college instructor and longtime mentor, who played a significant role in shaping John's musical journey.

He shared a bond with his son Kenny, passing along not only his musical talents but also his values and love for harmony. He treasured time spent singing with his brothers and the laughter they shared through music.

He is survived by his father, John Sr.; brothers Mark; Steve; Joe (Amy); and Jim (Kim); niece Amanda Hankinson; and nephew Jared Tarantino. He held a special closeness with his uncle Jack Bauer, whose support and guidance were constants throughout John's life.

He was preceded in death by his mother Roberta; brother Robert; and beloved son Kenneth.
