John Watters Obituary

John "Jack" Lord Watters, M.D., 82, of Raleigh, NC, died at home Saturday, September 2, 2006.
He was born to John Piper Watters and Sarah Thomas Watters on June 14, 1924 in Charlotte, NC. Jack was a captain and a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII in the Aleutians.
He attended UNC-CH for undergraduate studies and received a medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School, serving a residency at Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. Dr. Watters practiced family medicine in Greenville, NC, establishing a student clinic at the current East Carolina University (then ECTC). After leaving family practice, he became the medical director of Roerig and then Pfizer Laboratories in New York, followed by becoming medical director and vice-president of Becton Dickenson Pharmaceutical Company in New Jersey.
In 1978 he returned to NC with Becton Dickenson. He then went in to clinical medicine at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, where he retired as medical director in 1989.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Raborg Watters; and children, John L. "Jay" Watters, Jr., Thomas "Thom" M. Watters, and Amy W. Wilson, all of Raleigh, W. Waddell Watters of Yadkinville, NC, and Elizabeth "Liza" W. Hopper of Princeton, WV. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Colton of Asheville, NC.
He will be remembered fondly by a great many friends in the community and around the country.
A memorial service will be held at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas at 2205 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh on Tuesday, September 5 at 6:00 p.m., followed by visitation there until 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Association of the Blind.
