Julia Hunter Obituary

Anne Arendell "Kitty" Hunter, 78, died peacefully in her home on May 28, 2008.
She was born June 2, 1929 in Raleigh to Banks Arendell and Helen McCrary Arendell.She attended Ravenscroft School and Raleigh Public Schools. She graduated from Needham Broughton High School and attended Duke University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. While at Duke, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
After college, she went to work in Atlanta, where she met the love of her life, Dr. Richard Samford "Dick" Hunter. They were married in Raleigh in 1952, one year to the day after they met. Kitty and her new husband moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where Captain Richard Hunter served in the U.S. Air Force. They moved to Raleigh in 1954. Dick enjoyed a flourishing dental practice in Raleigh for 32 years. Kitty spent 27 years of her married life raising five boys, and in her words, "I loved every minute of it."
After the boys were up and out of the house, Kitty went to graduate school at NC State University, and in 1978 was awarded a Master's Degree in Education. After several years in practice as a career guidance counselor Kitty returned to school and in 1983 became a licensed realtor. She was a charter member of what is now York, Simpson and Underwood realtors and worked with that company from 1983 to 2001.
Kitty was active in civic and social affairs. She served as a docent for the NC Museum of Art and was a member of the Raleigh Junior. League. Kitty was a volunteer at the Junior League Bargain Box and performed in the Junior League Follies. Kitty and Dick were members of the Carolina Country Club and the Assembly Club. Kitty made her debut before the North Carolina Terpsichorean Club in 1948.
She was a beloved wife, mother and friend. Kitty loved art and music and was an accomplished pianist, poet and painter. She spoke French and loved to dance, entertain, shop, travel and read. She had an unparalleled love for life.
She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Richard Samford Hunter.
She is survived by her five sons, Richard S. Hunter, Jr. and wife, Jane Messer Hunter of Raleigh, Banks Arendell Hunter of Raleigh, Joseph McCrary Hunter and wife, Anne Van Roden of Seattle, WA, Earl Hunter of Raleigh; and Robert Vernon Hunter and wife, Eleanor White Hunter of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Richard, Benjamin, Diana, Anne, Banks and Mary Ellen; sister, Helen Arendell Ellington and her husband, Robert N. Ellington of Burlington.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday June 2, 2008, at Edenton Street United Methodist Church. A reception will be held at the Kerr Reception Hall at the church immediately following the services. The family will have a private burial and committal.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday June 1, 2008 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's Street in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Foundation of Hope, 9401 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27617.
