Kenneth Joseph Fischler, Sr.

August 3, 1930 - December 22, 2015

Morehead City

Kenneth Joseph Fischler, Sr., 85, of Morehead City, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, at First United Methodist Church, Morehead City, with the Rev. E. Powell Osteen, Jr., officiating.

Mr. Fischler was born August 3, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, to Benjamin Louis and Lily Bonis Fischler. He graduated from Cornell University, served two years in the Navy, and then worked as a biometrician for the U.S. Fisheries Department. He married Jerry Nelson of Morehead City in 1956 and they had four children: Ken Jr. (1957), Karen (1959), Dorothy (1965), and Daniel (1968). In 1969, Mr. Fischler began a career in financial advising, establishing countless relationships until his retirement from Wachovia Securities in 2005. Known to his grandchildren and their friends as "PopPop", Mr. Fischler's biggest joy in life was supporting them in their many activities; he was a constant presence on the sidelines across North Carolina. His family is grateful to God for his legacy of love and integrity.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jerry Nelson Fischler; son Kenneth Joseph Fischler, Jr. and wife, Laura of Raleigh; daughter Karen Fischler Rudolph and husband, Sanford, of Winston­ Salem; daughter Dorothy Fischler Carr and husband, David, of Morehead City; son Daniel Glen Fischler and wife, Jeannie, of Morehead City; sister, Dorothy Fischler of Titusville, FL; grandchildren, Jordan Rudolph, Courtney Rudolph, Emily Carr, Jackson Fischler, Caroline Rudolph, Jared Carr, Hannah Fischler, and Daniel Fischler, Jr.

In addition to his parents, his sister, Arline Fischler Peterson, and brother, Jerry Fischler, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home on Sunday, December 27, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carteret Literacy Council, 4907 Bridges Street Ext., Suite D – F, Morehead City, NC 28557 or First United Methodist Church, 900 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.

Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. of Morehead City.

Ken was a good neighbor and friend not just to me but to my grand children also and my dog Bella. Ken would always tell Jeri, Bella was across the street waiting for her.

Ken joined the Carteret Literacy Council as a volunteer tutor in October of 1986.
As a dedicated volunteer, he tutored numerous basic literacy and English as a Second Language adult students and children over his twenty-nine years.

He received his senior tutor certificate in October of 1987 for 40 hours of volunteer
tutoring, in February of 1994 his advanced tutor certificate for 150 hours of volunteer tutoring, and in February of 1998 his master certificate for 300 hours of volunteer tutoring.
He was dedicated to his students and ended up tutoring for over 500 volunteer hours.

Ken changed so many people's lives in ways we may never know about. I have a feeling you will be teaching in heaven.
