Madeleine Szontagh Obituary

Madeleine Szontagh
Raleigh
Madeleine Szontagh died peacefully in Raleigh, N.C. April 10, 2012 at age 91. She was born and grew up in Sopron, Hungary, emigrating to Venezuela in the
turmoil following WW II, where she married George Szontagh and started a family. She then moved to NYC with her family where she spent many years as a textile designer, including working in Vera's design studio. She was also author of many Dover Publications design books, under her pen name Madeleine Orban-Szontagh. She fondly remembered the years in Tarrytown, NY, before making North Carolina her home of the past 20 years. Madeleine charmed everyone she met with her old-world graciousness. And she found time to perfect her rich Hungarian cuisine, while working as a business entrepreneur. She loved to ski, swim, dance, travel, read, and laugh, and spoke four languages, learned mostly out of necessity.
Mrs. Szontagh is survived by her husband, George Szontagh, her two sons, Paul and George Jr., grandchildren Brian and Blair, and her brother Paul
Orban of Sydney, Australia and his family. She was much loved and will be missed by all.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Blue Ridge Health Care Center and Elmcroft Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wake Co. Hospice in her name.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 16, 2012 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Elmcroft Assisted Living, 421 Van Thomas Drive, Raleigh NC 27615.
