Michael Gupton Obituary

Michael Leigh Gupton

September 29, 1952 - April 20, 2024

Raleigh, North Carolina - Michael Leigh Gupton, 71, of Raleigh passed away peacefully with family around him on April 20, 2024, following a serious fall.

Born in Raleigh, Mike lived and thrived in the City of Oaks. Raleigh was always home. He was the son of the late Larry Leigh Gupton and Margaret Griffin Gupton. He was predeceased by his first wife Martha Gupton; son, Michael Gupton Jr.; father-in-law, Thomas E. Hall; mother-in-law, Mary Ruth Hall; father-in-law, Troy Billings; mother-in-law, Mary Billings; sister-in-law, Virginia Sherwood; and brother-in-law, Ray James. What a glorious reunion there must have been!

To know Mike is to know he loved his family deeply; his entire family. Mike was married to his wife Sherry for twenty years. They shared a love of traveling, annual vacations to Emerald Isle, and cheering on the Wolfpack and the Hurricanes.

Mike is survived by his daughter Laura Abner, and husband, Chris, their children Anabelle, Grace, and Margaret (Maggie) of Rocky Mount, NC; his daughter, Karen Howe and husband, Robert, their children Alexander, Elijah, Ella and Lucy of Blacksburg, VA; his stepson, Andy Wales and wife Hilary Stoddard of Raleigh, NC; and his stepson, Graham Wales and wife Trish, their children Shiloh, Judah and Norah of Raleigh, NC; his sister Patty James; his brother, Chris Gupton and sister-in-law, Andi Gupton; his stepmother, Jean Gupton; along with many other brother- and sister-in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Mike's love for people was fueled by devotion to his Lord Jesus. He was a faithful member of St. Mark's UMC. Mike will be remembered for his generosity, infectious laughter, and fantastic stories. He loved driving whatever car he owned, taking his family on "ride-arounds," and watching the latest movie at his local theater. To everyone Mike knew, he was a 15 out of 10.

Mike always had much to say about his life, and those around him loved hearing about it. But he only needed one word to sum up his view of his world: "Wow!"

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Wake Med Neuro ICU for their loving care during his final days.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, on Saturday, April 27 at 2:00. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's UMC

So sorry to hear about the passing of Mike. Several years ago while taking my parents to an eye appt in Raleigh, I ran into Mike. Having not seen him in years, I knew there was something very familiar with his face! Of course, he and I were Gupton cousins. We chatted like old friends/cousins and took our picture together. I remained in the Wood community where his parents were born. Praying for peace and comfort for the Gupton family. Kim Gupton Stewart

My family and I are heartbroken to learn of Mike's passing. What a beautiful soul he was, and such a caring neighbor. My children often tell the story of "that time Mike killed the copperhead in our yard"--a heroic endeavor in which he selflessly saved the day! He will be missed dearly.
