Michael Ossi Obituary

Michael J. Ossi
August 24, 1946 - July 20, 2022
Cary, North Carolina - Dr. Michael J. Ossi passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2022. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather (Nonno), uncle, and friend.
Michael is survived by his wife of 50 years Jacqueline; his three daughters: Kerry (Tim) and their daughters Willa and Edie, Erica (Charlie and his daughters Mattie and Lola), and Lauren (Jason); his siblings Paul (Michael's twin), Mary, John, and Greg; as well as their families. He is pre-deceased by his parents Anthony and Lucille (Schorr) Ossi and his brother Joe (Anthony Joseph).
Michael was born in Washington D.C. on August 24, 1946. He graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Maryland, where he and his twin brother Paul played basketball and where he was later inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended Stonehill College in Massachusetts on a basketball scholarship, graduating with honors. Playing, coaching, and watching basketball would remain a big part of his life; during friendly games, he was fond of teasing: "I couldn't miss with a missing machine."
After college, he attended the University of Maryland Medical School. He went on to pediatric residencies and internships in Massachusetts and Wisconsin and a two-year fellowship at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. In 1977, Michael established his pediatric practice in Auburn, Massachusetts where he loved caring for children and getting to know their families. His 6'7" stature combined with his tender-hearted nature encouraged many to think of him as a gentle giant.
Although he loved practicing medicine, in order to spend more time with his own family, Michael decided to switch gears. In 1988, he and his family moved to North Carolina where he worked in clinical research at GlaxoSmithKline until his retirement. He also spent several years serving as Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Infectious Disease at UNC Chapel Hill, where he shared with medical students his own passion for the importance of compassion and respect for patients as people.
Michael will be remembered for his tendency to always look to help others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held for family and close friends in North Carolina at a future date. Because he devoted much of his life to caring for children, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Michael J. Ossi Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Hello. I was filling out paperwork for CHA in Auburn (I´m a post partum nurse in an hospital in Worcester) and I was remembering Dr Ossi. He cared for my oldest daughter and referred her to a neurologist when diagnosed her a three years old with a brain tumor. She´s fine now with 2 boys of her own but I´ll never forget the kind and caring way he helped us navigate a very difficult time. I was heartbroken when he left the practice. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I am so very for your loss. I was in tears seeing this. Michael was the best Pediatrician!! He examining tables were higher than most to preserve his back. He checked my son for being tongue tied when he was an infant and said many do not check. He was and it was corrected. You could call him anytime. When at his house he first question was How are the Kids! My thoughts and prayers are with Ossi Family. We will miss you Michael more than you will ever know

Michael and Paul were two great guys to grow up with at Holy Redeemer seventy years ago. I can see Michael in a pickup game with our Lord as I write. God bless Michael.
