Nora Bradshaw Obituary

Nora Susan Hatcher Bradshaw

September 24, 1937 - May 22, 2025

Raleigh, North Carolina - Nora Susan Hatcher Bradshaw (Susan), age 87, of Raleigh, N.C. passed away on May 22, 2025.

Susan was born on September 24, 1937 to Dr. Martin Armstead Hatcher and Nora Langston Hatcher and grew up in Hamlet, N.C. where she enjoyed playing basketball in high school.

Susan graduated from Duke University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She was presented as a debutante at the Terpsichorean Club Ball, then spent the following year studying in France at the Université Paris Cité.

When she returned to the states, she obtained a Master's of Education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and taught high school French in Charlotte, N.C. On July 1, 1962, Susan married Dr. Preston H. Bradshaw, Jr.

Susan graduated with honors from Campbell University School of Law in 1980 and found joy and fulfillment as an attorney specializing in Social Security disability law. Her daughter was honored to join her in her law practice, which Susan did not retire from until age 77.

After retirement, she found great satisfaction playing bridge and was a fierce competitor in local groups. Susan will be remembered as smart, independent, and generous with her family and friends.

Susan loved the beach and spent many happy days there, first at her home in Cherry Grove, S.C, and later at her condo at Ocean Beach Isle, N.C. While at the shore she spent hours walking the beach and amassed a huge collection of seashells, which provided a bounty of materials for her hobby making seashell crafts.

Susan is survived by her siblings, Dr. Rebecca Buckley of Durham, N.C. and Dr. Martin Hatcher, of Greensboro, N.C.; her two children Michael Scott Bradshaw, and (Susan) Michelle Bradshaw Harris; and her two grandchildren, Stephanie and Matthew Harris. She was predeceased by her former husband, Dr. Preston H. Bradshaw, Jr, and her companion of 25 years, Dr. George C. Edwards.

At Susan's request, there will be no memorial service.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, N.C.

Susan was such a kind lady I loved visiting with when I came into town. I loved sitting in her parlor listening to her stories and visiting with her. On my last visit she allowed me to cut a bouquet of her beautiful blue hydrangeas from her front yard. I will miss her and feel honored to have know her. Rip dear Susan.

Susan added many happy times to my life by playing bridge. She was very generous sharing her condo at ocean isle beach with several of her friends. She was a loyal friend and will be missed greatly. This is a picture of the last time we played bridge together.
