Peggy Wilkinson Obituary

Peggy Wilkinson

November 20,1947 - April 15, 2017

Cary

Margaret Dreher Carroll Wilkinson, 69, passed away on Saturday morning, April 15, 2017, at her home with her loving husband, Jerry at her side. "Peggy" was predeceased by her parents Walton Douglas (Doug) Carroll, Sr. and Leila Margaret Dreher Carroll.

Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, she graduated from A.C Flora High School and The University of SC College of Nursing. She was well-respected, as a registered nurse for years, at Baptist Medical Center. Peggy was a competent and compassionate head nurse in pediatrics, and last served on the initial nursing staff of their new oncology unit, ministering to oncology patients and helped in teaching the new nursing staff.

She met Jerry when he was teaching at USC. They married in her family church, Ebenezer Lutheran, where she had been active all of her younger life. After marriage, she went to Kinshasa, Zaire, Africa, while Jerry served in the Peace Corps. For two and a half years she worked in Peace Corp clinics and experienced life in that part of the world.

Coming back to the states, she and Jerry moved to Cary, NC, where he worked in Public Health for NC, and Peggy continued her nursing career at Raleigh Children and Adolescent Medicine, working with children from birth to college age. She stayed there until recently retiring. In her years of service, she brought much comfort and healing to her many patients; however, her son Sam was her greatest joy and accomplishment. Sam is currently finishing college in Oregon.

She is survived by husband Jerry Franklin Wilkinson and son Samuel "Sam" Franklin Wilkinson, of Portland, Oregon, brother, Walton D. Carroll, Jr. (Jerolyn Long) and sister and best friend, Virginia Carroll Coleman (Curtis, Jr), sisters-in law Lydona Wilkinson Miller (John) and Stephanie Wilkinson Halstead (Bill), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Thank you to all who have shown Peggy such love and care at this time, especially Stephanie Halstead and her care-givers. Peggy was the epitome of pure, ethical living, and lived these characteristics throughout her shortened life. She came from a close-knit family, and her goodness and sweet selfless nature will be missed. Having never smoked a cigarette in her life, remembrances to The American Cancer Society (att: NSCLC) for Non-small cell Lung Cancer or Duke-Raleigh Hospice would be her desire. A memorial service will take place at a later time.

Jerry and Sam - It is hard to believe. Seems like yesterday she was here at the office. Of course, many of us here now worked with her and we have all been sharing stories about Peggy. More than anyone I have worked with, I knew with Peggy whatever I asked her to do as a nurse she always did it. I didn't realize this at the time but looking back she was very humble - never defensive or short - and that is not what you always find.

We wrote a tribute on our webpage if you want to take a look at it: http://www.raleighchildren.com/she-loved-being-a-nurse/

Some people have commented about Peggy on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/raleighchildren/photos/a.384722942129.170878.289528662129/10154258315442130/?type=3¬if_t=like¬if_id=1492782661459220

It is clear that she meant a lot to a lot of people.

Sam and Jerry, Peggy was a wonderful person to work with and to converse with. She always found a way to laugh, smile and cherished every moment of life. At Raleigh Children, I called her Sergeant because she truly knew how to get the job done. She will forever be missed by many. May God hold you and guide you through these times. He is your help.

I was so sad to hear of Peggy's passing. She was a kind, compassionate person. Even when she wasn't feeling well these last couple of months she found ways to make us laugh. I will be praying for your family.
