Durham, North Carolina - Robert Emmett Winton
Robert (aka Bob, Dad, Bobby C and Bobby) suffered a major stroke walking to a Duke basketball game with a close friend. He died peacefully a few days later on November 7, 2022, surrounded by family whose vigil included dancing, singing, laughing and lots of tears.
His survivors include Pam Winton, his wife of 54 years, three sons and daughter-in-laws (Tyler and Kim Winton of Durham; Brett Winton and Maria-Elena Kolovos of Venice, CA; Scott Winton and Natalia Ocampo-Peñuela of Santa Cruz, CA); seven grandchildren (Piper Elle Winton, Tula Ophelia Winton, Wylie Otis Winton, Akylas Winton Kolovos, Ioni Winton Kolovos, Silvia Winton-Ocampo, Manu Winton-Ocampo), three siblings (Elizabeth Gatewood, Raymond Winton and Charles Winton), and many in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and lifelong friends, all of whom he loved deeply and upon whom he bestowed his meticulously prepared homemade granola.
Bob was born in Annapolis, MD. He moved with his family to Raleigh as an infant when his father, Lowell Winton, joined the math faculty at NCSU. He graduated from Broughton HS in 1964, enrolled in the newly established Honors Program at UNC-CH and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a chemistry major in 1968. He received a Justin Potter Fellowship to Vanderbilt Medical School graduating in 1971. He completed a pediatric internship at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, served in the CDC as an epidemiology intelligence officer stationed in Concord, NH, and did a psychiatric residency at Duke. He practiced psychiatry in Durham for the rest of his career, including a stint as the Director of Behavioral Health at Durham Regional Hospital.
He loved tennis, dancing, music, and tinkering with problems; but paramount in his life was devotion to family and the joys of sharing laughter with his closest friends.
The issues that roused his passions related to the environment, education, mental health, social justice, equity, and women's rights. He was also a generous supporter of NPR jazz radio shows. If inclined to donate in his memory, please consider an organization with these foci.
A memorial service will be held at Carolina Friends School, 4809 Friends School Rd in Durham, NC on Nov 19 1-3pm.
The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences can be made at
