Samuel Alexander Wilson III

Samuel Wilson Obituary

Samuel Alexander Wilson, III lost a hard fought battle with cancer at home on Friday, January 26, 2007. He was born April 12, 1951 in Presbyterian Hospital. His parents were Julia Hill Wilson and Samuel Alexander Wilson, Jr. He graduated from East Mecklenburg High School, undergraduate at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina School of Law. He was the Chairman of the Mecklenburg Republican Party in 1983. He practiced law in Charlotte until Governor Jim Martin appointed him Legal Counsel to the Governor in 1985. He met his wife, Harriett Heard, formerly of Columbus, GA, who also worked in the Martin administration. He was later appointed Chairman of the Parole Commission. In 1990, he ran for Attorney General. Governor Martin appointed Sam to the Superior Court bench in Charlotte. After a period he returned to private practice where he continued until he was struck with lung cancer in October 2002. After four months of being threatened by death, God healed him. He was cancer free for six months. Then the cancer returned.
Sam was a man of strong faith who died after a long battle with cancer. He said the day he found out he had cancer was, "the worst day of my life, and the best day of my life. It was the worst day of my life because I was told I would die. It was the best day of my life because I knew my faith was real and I realized that Jesus knew me by name."
He is survived by his wife, Harriett Heard Wilson; daughters, Patricia Wilson Magee and her husband Patrick of Charlotte, NC, Joan Wilson of Charlotte, NC, Caroline Wilson of Charlotte, NC, Katherine Shiver and her husband Kurt of Dothan, AL; son, Bo Knight and his wife Lisa of Wetumpka, AL. He had five grandchildren, Hannah and Maggie Shiver, Turner, Helen Grace and Hunter Knight. His brothers Marcus Wilson of Jackson, MS and Ross Wilson of Charlotte, NC also survive him.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday at Harry and Bryant Company.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Covenant Church, 800 Fullwood Rd., Matthews, NC 28105.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Christ Covenant.

Dear Wilson Family,

We heard about about Sam's passing just yesterday; my parents sent us a copy of the sweet article that was published about Sam in the Observer. We were so sorry to hear about his passing. I have fond memories of working with Sam at BTW. Without a doubt, by his faith Sam is with the Lord now and all those great Southern souls he admired so much.

Our prayers are with you,

Andy and Ligia Smith

Dear Harriet,

My deepest sympathy to you in learning of Sam's death. You may not remember me, but my husband Larry and Sam became acquainted while taking chemo. Larry passed away on April 5th of last year, so I feel your loss. You are fortunate that he survived his disease as long as he did. May it help to know that others care.

Harriet,
I was saddened my Sam's death. I admired his convictions and forthrightness. It seems remarkable that so many years have passed since we worked together. I hope that his faith, life well-lived and his years of public service will bring comfort to you and your family in the difficult days ahead.

I met Sam when I worked with American Arbitration. He quickly became my favorite judge. Much for the same reason he became a special acquaintance and friend. He was pleasant, intelligent, honest, fair and above all else willing to serve. Sam’s love of life was apparent in everything he did. He loved his Lord, he loved his family, his church, his work and his leisure activities. It was this love of life that allowed – that enabled Sam to eke so much more out of life on this earth than most of us could ever hope to do. He has left that lesson well learned with me. Thank you, Sam. Your inspiration will live long in many of us.
