Susan Wiley Obituary

Susan Carrington Kilgore Wiley
June 28, 1941 - January 24, 2022
Raleigh, North Carolina - On Monday, January 24, 2022 Susan Carrington Kilgore Wiley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded by her loving children. Her faith in Christ gave her assurance and comfort that a heavenly home awaited as well as a reunion with her loved ones that had gone on before.
She was a born in Raleigh, North Carolina on June 28, 1941 to James Dinwiddie Kilgore of Raleigh and Margaret McLean Edmundson of Smithfield. She was a 1959 graduate of Needham Broughton High School and Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, DC. She met the love of her life John Randolph Wiley, of Washington, NC on a blind date at NC State. Later that year they eloped in Dillon, SC on July 22, 1961 and enjoyed many years together before John passed away December 31, 2011.
Susan loved many things passionately. She loved sports including the NC State Wolfpack, the Carolina Hurricanes, NASCAR and every sport her grandkids played.
Susan was an avid, accomplished genealogist not only researching and documenting all the lines of her own family but enjoying helping many others research theirs. Susan and John spent many years going all over the United States searching through cemeteries, churches, courthouses and libraries validating the families' ancestry.
Susan was proud of her deep Raleigh heritage that started with her grandparents ties to NC State University, Peace College and Pine State Creamery Co.
Above all things Susan loved her family. They were at the center of all she did. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a great cheerleader and supporter of all of her family's endeavors. We will all miss our daily calls with Granny. She always wanted to know what was going on in our lives.
Susan is pre-deceased by her parents, James Dinwiddie Kilgore and Margaret McLean Edmundson Kilgore and her loving husband John Randolph Wiley.
She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren: daughter, Bettie Carrington Wiley Olson and her husband, Steven Robert Olson of Chapel Hill and their children: Christina Adams Olson Cronk (Ryan) and their children Adelaide Leah Cronk and Lydia Camille Cronk of Durham; Caroline Carrington Olson (fiancé Cody Baker) of Raleigh, and Michael Ruggeri Olson of Washington DC; son, John Randolph Wiley, Jr. and his wife, Kathy Dawson Wiley and their son John Randolph Wiley, III "Jack" of Raleigh, NC; son, James "Jim" Kilgore Wiley and his wife, Sharon Blackwood Wiley and their children: James Kilgore Wiley, II, David Blackwood Wiley, and Elizabeth Adams Wiley all of Raleigh, NC.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bradley Carlson for his faithful care of their mother, as well as her many loving caregivers.
A graveside service will be held Friday, January 28th at 10:30 am at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Susan was always generous with her family, friends, and community. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Raleigh Rescue Mission, PO Box 58634 Raleigh, NC 27658 or to the charity of your choice.

So sorry to hear about Susan's death. Our families are lucky to have had her in our lives. I spent a lot of time with the Kilgores when I was young and have great memories of those times. I haven't seen Susan in years, but we did communicate intermittently. I share an interest in family genealogy with her and was grateful for the information she shared. We will all miss her.
