William Russo Obituary

William Andrew Russo

October 24, 1949 - December 2, 2014

Raleigh

William Andrew Russo, "Bill", age 65, has passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a man who served in politics and believed in its potential to help improve society. He was a man who traveled the world, visiting different cultures and appreciating all of their variety. He was a man who appreciated art, whether in a well-done painting, an exciting film, or a well-written book. Most of all, he was a man who knew the power of love, and instilled in others an appreciation of the world and all it could offer. Family and friends have all felt his warmth and humor, which makes the news of his passing all the more sad. He will be dearly missed and his memory will not be forgotten.

Bill was preceded in death by his father Frank Russo and mother Dorothy Jo Witt Russo. He is survived by three sons: Alex Russo, Phillip Russo and Ted Russo. Bill graduated from New Bern High School and was a Morehead Scholar at UNC from which he graduated in 1971. Bill was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

A memorial reception will be held by his family and friends between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 pm in the afternoon on Monday, December 8, 2014 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Stadium Drive, Chapel Hill, N.C. Online remembrances can be shared with his family by emailing Ted Russo at [email protected], who will be posting remembrances on Bill's facebook page. In lieu of flowers, please consider the needs of the family or consider donating to a charity of your choice.

I grew up with Bill in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a few years older than me, so he was closest to my older brother, John (and my other older brother, Emmerson aka Frank). We used to play together as young children, but after his parents moved to the east coast, we lost touch with the family.

Sorry I wasn't able to see you Bill prior to your death. It's sad we never stayed in touch.
You were always my "big brother" that I was always proud of your accomplishments in life, Bill.
I have always missed our conversations.
May the Lord keep you forever, Bill.
Love,
Nancy Jo Russo Emanuel.

I shared a dinner with Bill, a few years ago. I enjoyed listening to him talk about his travels and looking at beautiful travel photographs. We laughed about how he had simplified his wardrobe and stuck to black shirt and kaki pants. It makes choosing what to wear so much easier he said. He encouraged me to return to school and get my degree. I am glad I followed his advice, now we are fellow Tar Heels. He told me that he was the writer of the Toyota Slogan, "I love what you do for me". Bill, I love what you did for me. You are missed.

So sorry to see the news about Bill. I had the privilege of working with him in the President Ford Campaign many years ago and remember him fondly.
Sincere sympathy to family and friends
of this very kind gentle man.
