When Ethel Dayka died in Santa Barbara on May 17, 2018, the world lost an angel who had resided on the earth for 91 years. Born Ethel Toth in New Brunswick, New Jersey on September 15, 1926 to Hungarian immigrants, Ethel was raised in Hungary, returning to the United States in her early 20?s with her young son, Les. She worked as a seamstress in New York before moving to California. She met and married, William Dayka in 1951, and brought three more sons into the world. Bill and Ethel worked side by side in their wholesale plant business - the Dayka Nursery in Santa Barbara - for many years. Ethel was known by family and friends for her wonderful Hungarian cooking and was never too tired to make the favorite dishes of her family. She also was known for her unfailing love of, and devotion to, her family. She was so proud of her four sons, six grandchildren, and great-grandson.
Ethel is survived by her four sons - Les Dayka, Steve Dayka (Donna), John Dayka (Vicki), and Bill Dayka (Cherie), six grandchildren - Nick, Matt, Jonathan, Kaitlyn, Karina and Kameron Dayka, and great grandson, Leo Dayka.
Ethel requested that no services be held. Instead, in her honor, continue her legacy of love by extending love and kindness to those you meet in the world.
