Charles Nessel Obituary

Charles Edward Nessel
Charles Edward "Ed" Nessel, son of Charles and Mary (Romito) Nessel and beloved husband of Leona (Kotch) Nessel for 49 years was born on March 1, 1947 in Georgetown, CT. He graduated from Wilton High School in 1965 and worked in the printing trade (Currie Litho, CT Printing) and as a golf course assistant at Richter Park and Winged Foot Golf Clubs. "Ed used to say that if you played golf, bowled or played softball he has probably met you. Although he might have only saw you on the field, course or lanes, he considered all of you as friends. Umpiring and playing softball for 50 years, he was involved in over 6000 games." Ed was a former president of the Danbury Industrial Softball League, coached Little League Baseball for 7 years and was a Life Member of Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department.
Ed enjoyed golf with lifetime friends, especially Ed, Dave, Bob, Dennis and many others. He loved to garden and give the produce away to whomever wanted it. He was always planting too much to eat by himself and for several years maintained over 100 tomato plants. Ed had a good sense of humor, was always quick with a joke and had one for every occasion. His favorite holiday was Groundhog Day and since he was the only celebrant, the groundhog bestowed him with many presents. He loved everyone and especially liked talking to the elderly and to children. He leaves behind his wife Leona, his sons Douglas and Eddie and his wife Christina, his brother John and wife Jo Ann, nieces Pam Nessel and Christa Vontell and her husband Rob and daughter Talia and his nephew Keith McGivern and wife Penny and many cousins around the country. He was predeceased by his parents and by his brother Tom.
Calling hours will be Friday January 12th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Bouton Funeral Home 31 W Church St. Wilton CT. Burial will be on Saturday, January 13th at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Ave., Norwalk, CT.
Flowers are welcome as are donations in Ed's memory to the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Company.

Knew Ed through our "softball" days! We both were lifelong members of the DISL, and we had some great "discussions" during many games!
Damn good man, my sincere condolences to his family & friends!

Condolences to Ed's family. I have great memories of playing ball with Ed umping our games. I also remember playing against his team. He was a good natured guy and never seemed to get upset. A real gentleman for sure.

I used to babysit the 3 Nessel boys and my mother Ruby Bergstone was friends with Mary Nessel. Ed was a kind man with a great sense of humor. Dear Leona, Steve and I send our love, hugs and prayers to you and your family from the Kozmas.

My heart goes out to you all, especially Leona , in your sorrow and grief. I have such fond memories of the stories Kurt told me about his giant cousins. Ed was a gentle giant. I always looked forward to chatting with him. He may be gone, but not forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Valerie

Eddie was such a nice guy. It was always a pleasure to play ball when he was umpiring. He was always quick with a joke and made sure of setting a tone for those of us that may have taken the game a bit too serious. My condolences to his family.
