It was a week ago today that I learned that Chris had passed on. I showed up at his house expecting to go on a final hike with him on one of his favorite trails in the hills of Camden, Maine. I was so shocked and saddened to hear the news. Chris was my "student/client" and I was his orientation and mobility instructor for a little over a year. But over the year we had become friends. We spent many hours hiking difficult, steep, rocky trails in all types of conditions. Chris did not shy away from challenges or even cold weather (even though I know he hated the cold). We hiked through knee deep snow and through icy patches on rocky hillsides. He found his way over streams using his hiking poles to find rocks to step on. One spring day, after a particularly long hike, he lost his balance while searching for the next stepping stone. He fell face first in the stream. Thank God he didn't hurt himself! He hopped up laughing and jokingly referred to himself as "Dances with Streams" (reference to "Dances with Wolves"). Boy could he make me laugh! He also referred to himself as "Captain Mobility" and I have to agree that it was an appropriate nick name. He was an inspirational traveler... just read what Adam Way wrote about his experience following him under blindfold. I witnessed that event and it was a marvelous sight to behold! I will sorely miss Chris, but I give thanks for having known him. I will keep his memory and the lessons he taught me with me always.

I first knew Creek as a client of EMPOWERS and as the owner it was my job to work with him to find employment in the Rockland Maine area. It wasn’t long after we met that I offered him a position with the company. Creek’s involvement with EMPOWERS has had a profound effect on myself and the client’s we serve; many people now have better lives due to his hard-work and commitment to the job at hand. I’m honored to have known such a remarkable person and I will miss him dearly. I’ve been flooded with memories since learning about his passing. There is one memory that I will share here today. Creek and I set-up a mobility lesson in Rockland that would require me to be blind-folded and he would guide me around town so that I would get a better idea about what it was like to be blind and in his shoes. My first thought: “Well, this is going to end badly... The blind leading the blind…” Boy was I wrong!!! We walked for miles on the streets of Rockland and I have never felt more connected to my environment nor have I ever put more trust in a person to keep me safe. Creek didn’t let me down. It was on this day that Creek showed be what true admiration is and that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I will miss your friendship, humor, candor, passion, smile, courage and charm. I’m a better person for knowing you and you will forever be in my heart.
When I get to heaven: Just holler at a brother and let me know what's up foo! You always made me laugh! Boy, I’m going to miss you.

So memorable.
I will always remember ball-walking between you and Damien.
I will always remember our first apartment together where I got addicted to Diet Coke because of you.

Creek-

It's still so hard for me to believe that your gone. But I know that your in a better place and looking down on all of us. I have so many great memories with you. Like the time we had mom paged over the intercom at the grocery store to come and get her two lost children at the front of the store, even though you and I were both adults :)
I will listen to every mix cd that you've ever made me at least 100 times, to keep the jams going. I love and miss you so much and will think of you every single day. You were a great big brother to me, and it will always remain that way.
Love,
Little Sis-

Creek~
Not a day will go by that I won't remember your smile and your infectious sense of humor. Life dealt you/us a tough deck to handle, and I believe you are looking down on us saying "please don't cry for me, I am finally at peace". You will be missed so much by myself, Greg, and my little ones. I keep reminding them of the great times they had with "Uncle Stick" in West Port Point and in Maine. We love you so much Creek, my heart is broken, but I know now that you are free to live life the way you wanted-with sight.
Love~Sis
