Donald Hooker Obituary

Donald R. Hooker II Donald R. Hooker II, a longtime Bethel resident, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 24, 2009 at his home in Loudon, N.H. He had recently celebrated his 60th birthday. Known as "D.R.," Mr. Hooker lived on Chestnut Ridge Road in Bethel in the 1960s and 70s, and was best known locally as a singer and songwriter who performed with the D.R. Hooker Band. He recorded three independently released albums, beginning with "The Truth" in 1972. His subsequent collections were "Armageddon" and "Rain on the Moon." He also worked at the former Claire Lane Music in Bethel and at the Music Guild in Danbury. Mr. Hooker went on to pursue a career in information technology, living in Bridgeport, Naugatuck, Hawaii, Worthington, Ohio, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Spartanburg, S.C., and Deering, N.H., prior to settling in Loudon. Most recently, he spent eight years as an IBM systems programmer with Systems and Communications Inc., contracted to the state of New Hampshire. While never achieving widespread recognition for his artistic work in his lifetime, Mr. Hooker's music to this day is regarded as important in the view of internet-connected fans from around the world. One online reviewer called "The Truth" a work that was "perfectly perched between the psychedelic 60s and the singer-songwriter 70s." The main loves of Mr. Hooker's life were music, his family camp in Maine, and his wife, Anita Marie. In addition to Anita, he leaves three step-daugh-ters, Dawn Applebaum of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sandra Young of West Palm Beach, and Michelle Harshbarger of Washington, Pa. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Moser of Reston, Va., and two brothers, Creighton of Branford and Greg of Marshfield, Vt. A gathering of friends from the Danbury area to celebrate Mr. Hooker's life will be announced in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The Bennett Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of the arrangements.

The first time I heard your music was on vacation in NYC at a restaurant in the ESB. I was immediately drawn in. I "asked Siri" and it led me to you. Thank you Mr. Hooker for your contributions to life and music.

Don was a good friend.

He loved music, especially "Hearts of Space". His holiday was Ground Hog's Day above all others. He loved the family camp in Maine.

He will be missed.

DR and I have been friends for over 30 years. I was proud to stand as best man at his wedding. We worked and played together in a few bands and even toured with our own duo "Eclectic Madley". We were roommates for a while and we even vacationed many times at his beloved family camp in Maine. There we collaborated on what was to become his "Rain on the Moon" album. Music was your passion and I thank you for allowing me to be a part of it and even more for being my friend through all these years. You were quite a character, I will miss you and, as you would say.... "be seeing you". Ty

I was privileged to call DR a friend. I played in his band for quite a while and arranged and produced his last album "Rain on The Moon". I had hoped to get together with him soon. I was recently re-married, moved and was rebuilding my home and studio and my life so I've not had time to contact many people. I will miss him. He's still someone we speak about at parties and it always brings a smile to our faces. Very talented. Loveable. I'll always be your friend DR. Till we meet again...save me a spot. Corky

I grew up in the house that was built behind the Hookers little red house on Chestnut ridge. My Grandmother (Jane Young) and Marge were friends /neighbors since the early 60's.
D.R. was a few years older than me, but he took the time to toss a frisbee with me once in a while. My friends and I would sit on the corner of Cannon and Chestnut and do the things teenagers did while we listened to the band practice in the garage. I continually have dreams of the property that we shared. The little pond/swamp and skating. They were good times and the Hookers were good people.
I can understand how his music was important. The area and people of that time were all a big part of my life.I am sorry for you loss. Also sorry that Marge passed recently too. Thanks for the memories!
