It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about Professor Storhoff, he left the longest and most powerful impression on me. To this day, I still bring him up in conversations where only his wisdom will suffice. Away from this place but NEVER forgotten. RIP Dr. Storhoff.

Dear Linda,

The final volume of the "Buddhism and American Culture" volume is coming together, and I've very sad that I can't correspond with Gary about it. It was such a great experience co-editing and co-writing him for the last ten years. He brightened up a lot of lives. Much metta, JWB

Happy Birthday, Gary since you`ve been gone the Vikings are still miserable, maybe you can help from up above. I knew my brother-in law for 40 years but got to know him better by spending two weeks with him in June. I only wish that I can be that gracious and strong towards everyone when it is my time. He walked when in pain, didn`t complain when in pain and was concerned about all around him instead of himself. He has had many good things said about him and they are true. He will always be in my thoughts and many others for the goodness he showed in this life. God Bless Gary and please try help our Vikings! Just Herb

Dr. Storhoff was such a positive, caring man, as others have said.

I know up in Heaven, he is rooting on his beloved Minnesota Vikings (you couldn't help but notice, as his office was a shrine to all things purple and gold!)

I graduated from UConn Stamford a year ago, and I knew Gary had told me he wasn't feeling well leading up to that point. I am shocked and saddened to learn of his passing from a fellow graduate, and on behalf of my family, I send my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly."

Dear Linda & Family,

Dr. Gary Storhoff, a man in a great family. Gary is a great sample of a person should be. I have known him for over 15 years as his child's math instructor and as a friend. He is one of the most responsible parents I ever met. He spent so much time and effort to raise his children tirelessly with love. He is a person with wisdom, modest, humblest, rigorous attitude in academy and willing to help people. His warm heart, his integrity, and honesty combined into his character and personality. Let's celebrate such a wonderful life and a wonderful human-being.

Gary was one of the scholars who arrived at the old campus on Scofieldtown Road in the 1970s. Some remained in the field and others, I among them, eventually left for careers outside of academe. Each time I returned to visit the campus, Gary was eager to chat and show me around. As always, he was unfailingly polite and gracious. It was evident that he remained enthusiastic about teaching.

My wife, Jody, and I are saddened at the news of his death and send our sincere condolences to his family.

His was an admirable legacy of optimism, decency and kindness.

I just noticed the obituary in today's paper and felt compelled to express my condolences and share my memories.

Gary Storhoff was my English teacher in the late 1970's. Everything I know about writing I learned from him. He was one of the finest educators I have ever encountered.

His colleagues, family and friends have truly lost an exceptional man.

Gary hired me at UConn in 1999, and for that, I will always be grateful. He was always helpful and kind, and always a great guy to talk to, whether it was about literature, Buddhism or college basketball. Anyone who knew him is going to miss him.

I began attending UConn Stamford last fall, and as a transfer student, naturally, I was nervous and uncertain about my new surroundings, but then I met Professor Storhoff, and all of my fears dissipated. He helped me adjust by immediately engaging my interest in the subject. Because of him, I knew that studying in Stamford and being an English major were the right decisions. I have always loved English, but it was not until I studied under Professor Storhoff that I realized why I love it so much. Literature has the capacity to move, inspire, show, and speak to us—Professor Storhoff taught me these aspects through his passion for his subject and his love for teaching. In the spring, when I told him about my desire to study abroad, he was 100% supportive and encouraging, sharing in my excitement and writing letters of recommendation to help my dream become a reality, and it did. He is one of the strongest, humblest, and good-natured people I have ever known. He is also one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I know that I am not alone in feeling this way. He has left a deep impression in many students' hearts and minds, including mine, and will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with his family—I send my deepest condolences and sympathy.

Gary and I started out at the old UCONN Stamford campus on Scofieldtown Road within a year of each other. We shared an office for eight and a half years. During that time, we never had a single argument.

When I returned to teaching after a 20-year hiatus, Gary took the time to write a letter of recommendation for me even though we had basically been out of touch for 25 years.

UCONN Stamford has lost a great teacher and scholar and a great human being.

This is hard news to take in. Gary was always running, always energetic; he'd stick his head in my office and smile hello as he zoomed by. To see him was a lift in the day. He was devoted to the campus and to his teaching, but he always had time to help a new assistant professor right out of grad school, as I was back in 1998. Many times I'd go to Gary for advice, and his warmth and encouragement were vital to me, as I know they were to others. I always appreciated, too, his excitement about his research and especially enjoyed talking to him about his work on Buddhism in American literature. I will miss him deeply and I extend my deepest condolences to his family.

Please accept my sympathy on your great loss. I was Dr. Storhoff's student for a short story class at UConn in 1980. I remember him as such a talented and caring teacher and have saved my papers with his comments. His life was a blessing to me.

Gary was both my doctoral student and my colleague of many years. He was a generous, serious, and confident scholar and a marvelous teacher. His grasp of essentials was obvious and his ability to bring his students into a state of understanding was subtle and powerful. I always enjoyed being in his presence, whether in meetings or in personal conversation. My deepest sympathies are with his family and I want them to know I felt Gary was one of the finest students I had as well as one of the finest colleagues and friends I had while teaching at Storrs. I feel very sad knowing that he is gone.

November 10, 2011

Gary was my esteemed colleague for nearly 37 years. I marveled at his ageless optimism, his intelligence, and his good nature. I don't remember a moment when he was less than positive and encouraging. His passing is a sad event. I and my family extend our deepest sympathies to his wife LInda and to his children Danielle and Wesley. He will be sorely missed by all of us here at UCONN Stamford. Sincerely, Jerry Sehulster
