Richard Sturdevant Obituary

Richard "Dick" Leon Sturdevant
Richard Leon Sturdevant, known to his loved ones as Dick, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2024, at the age of 89, in Bethel, CT. Born on March 23, 1934, in Danbury, CT, Dick was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
Dick's zest for life was evident in his many passions and interests. He found enjoyment in the great outdoors, spending his time hiking, camping, and canoeing. However, it was on the golf course where Dick truly thrived. Every Sunday, his only day off, he could be found indulging in his ultimate passion for golf. Throughout his golf career, Dick achieved an impressive feat with four holes-in-one.
Beyond his personal pursuits, Dick was a dedicated and active member of both the Newtown and Danbury communities. For over 40 years, he served in the Newtown and Danbury Lions Clubs, earning the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for his exceptional service. Additionally, Dick was on the Board of Trustees for over 20 years and eventually became Chairman of the Board of Union Savings Bank. He was also Chairman of the Newtown Police Commission, a member of the Newtown Rotary Club, Salvation Army, Newtown Men's Club, and the Newtown Romeo Club. He volunteered his time and expertise to various organizations, including the United Way of Danbury and Connecticut State Board of Accountancy.
Dick's military service played a significant role in his life. He proudly served in the US Army for three years, including during the Korean War. His commitment to duty and country exemplified his unwavering patriotism.
Professionally, Dick began his career in insurance sales in Pennsylvania, where he met his beloved wife, Marie. After relocating to Michigan and New York, Dick and Marie made the decision to join his family business in Connecticut. Eventually, they became the proud owners of Sturdevant's Photo, a business that had been in the family for three generations. Under Dick's leadership, the business flourished and expanded from 1971 to 1998, when he sold it to Ritz Camera.
Dick's faith was an important aspect of his life, and, in his later years, enjoyed worshiping at Newtown Congregational Church with his wife, Marie. In the early days, he religiously attended sunrise service at the first tee box at Ridgewood Country Club.
In addition to his professional and community achievements, Dick cherished his role as a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie Sturdevant of Newtown, CT, his daughter Leslie Ackerman of Tewksbury, NJ, son Michael Sturdevant and daughter-in-law Amy Sturdevant of Danbury, CT, and his sister Marcia Scholl of North Eastham, MA. Dick's memory will also be cherished by his surviving grandchildren, Samantha Ackerman, Ethan Ackerman, Madelyn Ackerman, Holden Ackerman, Cassandra Sturdevant, Canaan Sturdevant, and Cullan Sturdevant.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Dick's life will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Newtown Congregational Church, located at 14 West Street, in Newtown, CT. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Great Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dick's honor to Newtown Congregational Church, the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of choice.
Dick Sturdevant will be remembered as a remarkable individual who lived life to the fullest, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to community service, passion for golf, and unwavering love for his family will forever be cherished. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Marie, Leslie, and Michael. I am so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I remember the Fairchild Drive years and the parties held at your house like they were yesterday instead of like 40+ years ago. Dick's smile (which always included his eyes) is what I remember best. Now maybe he and my dad (the other Dick) can meet up in heaven -- share a drink and do some photography. Love Diane (Acey) Richard
