Thomas George Obituary

George, Thomas J.
Thomas Joseph George, 60, of Danbury died peacefully at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA on July 20, 2016 due to congestive heart failure caused by cardiac sarcoidosis (a rare autoimmune disease). He was born to Dorothy (Young) George and the late Harold Joseph George on December 9, 1955 in New York City.
Tom is survived by Barbara (Lambert) George, his wife of 26 years who teaches 7th grade social studies at Weston Public Schools, and Thomas Young George, his son who studies chemical engineering at Tufts University. Both were an immense source of pride for him.
He leaves a large extended family of numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins around the world. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy (Young) George of Danbury, two brothers, Stephen George of Brookfield and Michael George of Danbury, and two sisters, Margaret (George) Kolenski of Danbury and Daryn (George) Rowley of Danbury. Tom George was predeceased by his father, Harold George, his mother-in-law Helen (Turner) Lambert, and his father-in-law Stephen Lambert.
Tom was a career sports writer for The News-Times in Danbury for 15 years. During that tenure he received numerous awards and accolades, especially for his coverage of the UConn men's basketball team. Additionally, Tom was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his investigative report on Western Connecticut State University's athletic program. After Tom left sports reporting, he spent his years in various entrepreneurial ventures, and he designed and built a home on a beautiful plot of land by one of Danbury's reservoirs. But his self-proclaimed best occupation was being a stay-at-home-dad to his son, Tommy.
As a talented journalist, author, philosopher, personal financier, general contractor, entrepreneur, and father, Tom was a modern Renaissance man. A humble man of modesty and no pretense whatsoever, those who knew him throughout his life remain affected by his wit and wisdom. And Tom could spin a tale. His memory for the smallest details was both comical and impressive, sometimes leaving one to wonder if he was using his gift of tremendous imagination or not. Tom leaves his mark on the world in a quiet but profound way, and there will never be another like him.
There will be a memorial Mass at St. Joseph Church in Danbury on Thursday, July 28th at 10 a.m.

Dear George Family,

I am so sorry to learn of Tommy's passing. Having lived right next door to your family, part of the Sleepy Hollow gang lost a treasured soul in Tommy. He was one of the most talented artists I have ever seen. The whole family is talented in the art world. Daryn, Tommy's sister, was my best friend growing up and all thru high school. Our families were very very close. Tommy was quiet but a quick quick wit! The world is a better place as he was in it. I have so many fond memories that I will cherish. My deepest condolences. God Bless

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of my old friend, Tommy George. Although we knew each other at Immaculate High School, it was while working together at the News- Times that we truly became friends. I came to the News-Times in September of 1981 as a sports correspondent and Tommy was one of the editors there. He really held my hand and helped me immensely. This was at the time when the News-Times was transitioning from an afternoon daily to a morning daily. Before long, a typical Saturday night would go like this: in the office we would take in-coming sports results until about midnight, when the paper had to "go to bed". Then we were off to O'Tooles, and often to NY state before we returned to the Red Colony diner in Brookfield for breakfast, just as the Sunday News-Times was being delivered. As Ring Lardner, Pete Hamill and Jimmy Breslin disciples we would read the stories we had written the night before with great self-satisfaction. My memories of Tommy are fond. Farewell my friend.

To the family of Tommy George:

I am saddened to hear of Tom' passing and send my regards to you all. Tom was a colleague and friend at the Danbury News-Times in the 1980s; and was very supportive of me as a cub reporter. He was a good man and respected by those he met. I'll remember that mischievous smile and sense of humor! ...Stan Simpson

I recall with fond memories of my interactions with Tom during my first years at Western Connecicut. He was someone that always had great insight into people and events. Words cannot replace a husband and father but hopefully knowing the effect that Tom had on so many persons will help assuage your loss,

Just reading about Tom's passing hit me like a brick. I remember growing up on Sleepy Hollow and picking up my papers to be delivered at the George's house, hanging around with Michael and looking up to his big brother Tommy who was writing for the News Times.
I followed his coverage every day and he was an incredible writer. In fact, I still have a profile he wrote about me after my first year of coaching which still brings back memories of our 1st fciac championship.
Getting to know his wife Barbara allowed me to keep up with Tommy through the years. He was someone I always looked up to and will miss him. My prayers are with the George family during this difficult time.

I was so sadden to hear of Tom's passing. I met Tom in the 4th grade at St. Joseph's and later we on to Immaculate. I haven't seen Tom in years, but his memory is quite vivid to me. Tom was really one of the "good guys". He was intelligent, funny, and kind. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends for your loss.

To the George family,
Tom and I started at The News-Times at the same time and became immediate friends. He was always humble, honest and he looked at life from a different angle that made you think differently too. We took trips to CA and Ireland and New York State on occasion for a few beers after a long day in the office. Okay, maybe we went to New York more than just occasionally but that's the way hard-working journalists rolled back then. Today those are still some of the best times I've had in my life and I have Tom to thank for that.

When Tom was a sports writer on the local high school scene, it was a pleasure having him cover our event. His perspective on the contest was the best. Local high school coaches miss that era. My condolences to the George family.

I was so sorry to hear of Tommy's passing. He was a very special person whom I respected tremendously. Not many people could turn a phrase like Tommy but he had that rare ability to make you laugh and cry all in the same story. I will truly miss his presence on this earth and feel honored and grateful to have known him.

Tom's passing is truly sad to me. He and I were part of a small circle of buddies at Immaculate High School (Class of 1974) and we remained close for years after that.

Over the years, our own lives took us separate ways (in my case it was a career move that has made me a resident of NJ since 1989).

I last spoke to him in August 2012 ahead of open heart surgery I underwent late in that month.

We agreed to get together when I was back on my feet. But, sadly, it never happened.

With all that, he left an impression on my life that I will never forget.

He had many great qualities that will be noted by many who knew him. He was loyal, honest and smart. With all that came a great sense of humor.

I am especially sorry to all the family members he left behind. Knowing his spirit, I know he still had a lot to share with his loved ones and with all those he touched.

I am in recovery from major surgery, so I can not get around to attend any services, but he and his loved ones will be in my prayers

I am deeply saddened to hear about Tom.
He was my best friend that I abandoned in April of 2005, through my own fault. He deserved better.
He was the gentlest, warmest, most caring person that I have ever known.
(One time, I was with him and Barb, and saw a spider walk across the floor. I went to kill it. Tom got up and said, "wait"! He went and picked-up it up, opened his door and put it outside. He said, "I don't kill them. I like to help them get back on their way").
His love for Barbara and Tommy was the most beautiful experience that I have ever seen.
I would love to be just ten percent of the human that he was. I am ashamed of myself and now it's too late.
I will continue to think about him everyday just as I have this past decade.
Barb and Tommy and Tom's family, I am sorry for your loss and humanity's loss.
He was a great man.

I had the privilege of working with TJ for many years at The News-Times. He did a great job with any kind of story he was assigned, and was respected by everyone who knew him. I still remember attending the wedding of TJ and Barbara and the fun reception afterwards at the Ethan Allen Inn. My thoughts and prayers go out to TJ's family.

Please accept my sincere condolences at Tommy's passing. I was his seventh grade English teacher at St. Joseph's School. At that time Tommy told me he was going to be a journalist when he grew up. Even in seventh grade, he had a wonderful command of the English language. So much so that he received a writing award from a national organization. I was privileged to be pictured with him in the News-Times when he was presented the award. Our paths crossed again when he brought his son to an orientation at Broadview Middle School. Tommy reminded me that he said he was going to be a journalist in seventh grade, and he achieved that goal. He was one of those students a teacher never forgets.
