I was deeply saddened to hear about Bill's passing. He was always a welcome visitor at the Mt. Southington ski patrol office. His enthusiasm for the ski club helped an enormous number of students learn about the thrill and joys of skiing.

Mr. Benzing was really cool. I never had him but i was wishing i got him in 8th grade. Every Wednesday we used to go snowboarding and he would be there taking pictures of me and my friends. It was so fun hanging out with him on the slopes. He would always say hi to me in the halls. Every one says hes a great teacher and i wish I could have gotten to have him. Rest in peace, you will never be forgotten.

I never had Mr. Benzing as a teacher. I was only in seventh Grade. Mr. Benzing was a once in a lifetime teacher. Everyday he went the extra mile just to say high to me in the hall everyday after 5th block. Although we cannot see Mr. Benzing I know he is in a better place watching over us. I can remeber it like it was yesterday when Mr. Benzing was taking pictures of me on my first snowboard at Mount Southington. Mr. Benzing was also an avid contributor in saint mary's church. The one thing I learned is you never know what you have until its gone. We will always remeber you. RIP

A great friend once told me "Goodbyes are funny, because you'll never know when you're saying your last one." Mr. Benzing was not a teacher of mine, but a friendly face around the school and community. A teacher in Bethel for 35 years, a soft ball hall of famer inducted in 2002, an asset to the community, and being a volunteer are some of the many things I knew him for. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to the Benzing family.

Mr. Benzing was only my teacher for one week, the first week of this school year. I was supposed to be in the really small Algebra 2 class, which as others in the class have said was great, but I moved up a year. So while I only knew him from participating in ski club, and that 1 week, he was one of my favorite teachers at BMS. I only found out yesterday, when I came back form a trip in Europe. When my dad told me I thought he'd lost it. I must have asked him 10 times if he was serious. Even now as I read all the comments my classmates and other people have left, I feel like this can't be true. I know we'll all miss him so much at BMS.

Mr. Benzing was a great teacher, and by far on of my favorites. He always knew how to make someone smile if they weren't having a good day, or make a smile bigger. When you didn't understand something he would help you. He changed the way I look at math. It's not going to be the same without him!

Mr. Benzing was a great teacher and will be missed so much you can't even imagine, its the first day back from break and having someone else teach our class just wasn't right. Mr. Benzing was the best teacher in the whole wide world. Math will never be same without. He cared for all of us so much. But, I am just going to try to keep living life to the fullest. That's what Mr. Benzing did and i know he wants all of his students, family, and friends to do the same. I miss him a lot. He is in my thoughts and the Benzing family is in my prayers. Mr. Benzing,
BMS will never be the same, without you in the game. To help us when we're down, or just around. Whenever a fight, you'd make it right. If our brain got knotted from the arithmetic, you'd be there to unravel it. You'd stay after school, though that's not cool, to help us get our feet. On tests, you'd say good luck, but you'd help me when I got stuck, so in the end I got a passing grade. Thirty-five years is a lot, you'll never be forgot, you'll always be in our minds. No matter how long, our memories will be strong, you'll never go away.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to your family. Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.
My wife and I both had the pleasure of beginning our teaching careers in Bethel and working with dedicated and caring colleagues. Bill ( The original Mr. "B") exemplified this sentiment and amplified the energy and exuberance surrounding the building. It has been 8 years since I left the district; however, I can vividly remember Bill pitching softballs to me in the hallways in between classes. He has left a lasting impression of how to enjoy what you do, be good at it, and have fun along the way.
He was always there for the students and staff- before, during, and after school - in multiple capacities. His efforts were relentless and (I hope always) appreciated, including his 1996 100 meter leg of the 4 X 100 relay versus the top 8th grade teams. Is it any wonder that his efforts ended in a first place finish for the staff?
Bill will be missed and remembered by all. His impact on the community is eternal. May his delightful demeanor live on through others in the community. I will certainly miss traveling through the neighborhood and trying to catch up with Bill. With school starting again tomorrow, I can only wonder if my son will ask where Mr. Benzing is (as he often does) as we pass by the house.
Peace be with you Bill, and peace be with your family during this time.
Our thoughts and Prayers,
Michael and Danielle Bon Tempo

What terribly sad news ! I was in school with, and friend of Billy a long time ago - I have not lived in CT for years, but have family in the area, and visit often - and very often think of my old classmates. I've now learned that Bill found a great love and made a loving and lasting impact on countless people during his all too-short life. My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with you, Nancy and your family. God Bless.

Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences. Bill has been my colleague for the past 10 years and it is devastating to think that I will no longer see his smiling face in the halls of BMS, nor will I ever hear him converse with me in Spanish. Bill was one of the most easygoing, approachable people I have known. I will remember Bill Benzing as always ready to lend a hand, friendly, and certainly one of the kindest people I have worked with. As one of the senior members of our staff, his wisdom, guidance and enduring cheerfulness will be sorely missed. It comforts me to know that he will be in a better place with his beloved mother. Heaven's gain is indeed our loss

To the Benzing Family: My deepest sympathy in the loss of a such a good man. Bill had my children in class as well as sharing many ski trips with them. He was an excellent teacher and mentor to his students. No longer in the school system I would only see him at church or around town and he would always have a smile of recognition and ask about the family. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed by this town that he was such a great part of. Our deepest sympathy, The Kilmartin Family

It's been almost a week since I got Nancy's phone call, the call I never expected. Since I've known Bill my entire life, there isn't enough room in this book to write all the memories I have of him. Some of which were those days on Candlewood, (especially the day the steering wheel broke off, sound familar Simone?), the days & nights at the "men's club" on Willow Street with Bill, John & I. That night we apparently didn't need the "T" roof panels to his car. After all the sky was clear and the stars were shining. Yes it rained but it only took 4 days for the car to dry out. I won't even mention the Exchange Club Conventions. The many ski trips, bus rides and lets not forget those mandatory "advisor's meetings" Friday night in his & Nancy's room. Skiing through his legs got more difficult as years went on, but it became just one of those many ski trip traditions. He was the brother I never had, we were in each other's wedding party and I had the honor of being the bestman at his & Nancy's wedding. "Zinger, Zing, Slick", were just a few of the nicknames I had for him. While there is no blood relation my kids still called him "Uncle Bill". I can remember how happy I was when I found out my oldest son would be in his class. As Robb wrote, the group will be getting back together for what I hope will be the first of many "memorial" ski trips to our dear friend. I'll keep your memory close to my heart, I just hope you truly realized what you meant to Marge, Nick, Danielle, Stephen & I.
I Love you and will always cherish our friendship.

For those who may not have seen the rememberance card; a very fitting poem for the Bill we all knew & loved:
AFTERGLOW
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one,
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is gone.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times, and laughing times, and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

To the Family of Bill Benzing,
I would like to express my deepest sorrow and condolences on your loss of Bill. Bill was a great guy, good friend, and an honor and pleasure to know. God bless you and keep you in this time of sadness.

Nancy, Kevin, Richard, Michelle, Mary Beth and the entire extended Benzing Family and friends:
Todd and I felt such a terrible sense of loss when we heard of Bill’s death; we want to let you know that you have our deepest
sympathy....our hearts are truly saddened.
As shown in the many, many messages left here, Bill was more than just an all-around great guy, he was an integral part of the Bethel community: a mentor, a highly respected teacher and colleague, a friend with a caring ear to lend to anyone in need....especially ‘his‘ kids.
He was always a shining example of what all teachers ~should~ aspire to be, and will be fondly remembered for many years to come by the generations of kids he taught and friends he made.
Bill, you will always remain in our hearts, and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. May God give them the strength to carry on.
With our deepest sympathy....and wishing that we never had to make this entry,
Todd & Deb Brown

Bill was my colleague, my mentor, my friend--the leader and the heart of cluster 8b. Just a few short weeks ago, I told Bill that I was going to start charging him to yet again clean and organize the "important stuff" he amassed in our workroom monthly...there is nothing I would not give to once again open that door, sigh in exasperation...and organize with love. Bill, the clutter may lessen, but the "important stuff" will remain in our hearts always.
Nancy, kids, and the entire Benzing family--my thoughts and prayers are with you...

I cannot yet come to terms with the fact that Bill is gone. I close my eyes and I can picture him so clearly on the ski trips, at their pool parties and at our home. He was a gentle caring man, always there with a hug and a smile. This is a deep loss for his family and for his many friends. The rememberance card from his wake has asked us not to remember him not in saddness, but in joy. So we will honor him with a smile and memories of many, many good times.

To the Benzing family,
Bill and I met as employees of First National Stores in the mid sixties. We became good friends and had some truly fun times. We were colleagues at Hayestown Avenue School in Danbury when Bill was a student teacher there and I was a young fifth grade teacher. His outstanding teaching talents were evident even then.
Bill was a wonderful person and an outstanding teacher. I was blessed to have known him. May he rest in peace.

I wasn't a skier, was in the "other" cluster in eighth grade, and yet Bill Benzing still touched me deeply. He was a caring man, the kind of teacher where even if he wasn't YOUR teacher, you knew he was a great teacher. His was a face I always looked forward to seeing in the hallways in the first years in the "new" BMS, and the news of his passing has brought me great sadness. Blessings and comfort to the Benzing family in this difficult time, and thank you for sharing "Mr. B" with us.

Bill, your love and understanding of people is a gift that I hope you know I cherished and tried to emulate. All those weekend ski trips, the bus rides, the hotels, the mountains, they were the best of times. The bells on the ski poles, the mondays at southington, the veiw from the top of Okemo or Sugarbush...
The times we shared are times I will always cherish. You are the best, you always will be, and as long as we remember you, you are not really gone. We may not be able to touch you with our hands, but the way you touched our hearts, thats how we will keep you forever in our lives.
Bill we will miss you, and all of us will help Nancy and the kids get thru this hurt that will never heal.
Bill, I feel blessed to have known you, lucky to have had you as a friend, and I know my life is better because you were a part of it.
Rest well my friend, you touched so many lives, I wonder if you had any idea how much of an mamzing person you were.
The group will be getting together to meet at the top of a mountain, and the runs will be for you. We know you will be there with us. Until then, we miss you and love you.

Mr. Benzing was a former teacher and football coach of mine and a main reason for my career as a teacher now. He was way ahead of his times as far as teaching is concerned. His uncanny ability to spot students' strengths and use them to help instruct was amazing. He differentiated instruction and included all types of learning styles in his lessons. But most of all I will never ever forget his ability to make students, especially me, feel like they were important and what they did today would impact where they would be tomorrow. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Benzing about a month ago, as I was working as an administrative intern finishing up my degree to become a principal... he asked me how I could ever think of leaving teaching... His love for the profession and his students was still evident all these years later. The town of Bethel and all his former students and coworkers were blessed to have him in their lives. RIP Mr. B!

Bill was a great friend to me throughout college and beyond. I still have pictures of him from my graduation party wearing that large flat top hat. He tried to teach me how to scuba dive in the family pool but I wouldn't breathe through the mask. He was always so patient and willing to help. We never really dated just two friends who had similiar interests. When I wasn't playing softball he would take me to his softball games.

Like so many others who have shared their connection to Bill, I was one of his lucky students and proud to have been in his first class at BMS. Clearly, he went on to have many more great years of teaching and to positively influence the lives of so many people. Nancy, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Our prayers & condolences are with your family. I had the pleasure to be in Bill's first class in 6th grade in 1974-75 & he had an impact on my life and countless other students at Bethel. To the family of Mr. Bill Benzing: Nancy, Kevin, Richard, Michelle and Mary Beth and family
I had the honor of playing basketball for Mr. Benzing (as my coach) when I attended Bethel High School. He was not only a fabulous coach but a great man at all times. He was from the heart and loved life and that is what I will remember most about his legacy. He drove me to work after practice many times so I would not have to jog/walk and that was one of his way he showed he cared. I know that his personality was always upbeat and positive and that rubbed off on me. I had 3 years to share with this man and never did he disappoint. He is one of those special people that helped to make me who I am today. I use alot of his style when I coached in college and while working with students.
So I want to give my heartfelt sympathy to you all in your loss of a memorable man. But most I want to celebrate and honor a man that made the difference not just by his words but by his actions. He loved and had a great passion for children and it showed. He will never be forgotten and all the good times we shared on the bus rides to and from games will live on in my memories and heart. Peace be with him.

As a parent of one of Mr Benzing's students this year, I am very saddened by the passing of another true hero and difference maker for our children. My daughter always spoke very highly of Mr Benzing and she thoroughly enjoyed him as a teacher and a person. He made a difference in her life and he will surely be missed. From Alexa and my family, we would like to send our heart felt condolences to the Benzing family for your loss.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I went to school with Bill and remember how funny he was and at the same time how serious he could be. I graduated in '70. And my children had him for math in the 90's. They both remember him as an awesome teacher. He will be missed by all and remembered by many. Also had many great talks with him when I walked my 5 Italian greyhounds around the block.
God Bless your family.

My deepest sympathies to Mr. Benzing's entire family. My heart felt condolences and prayers go out to you. Mr. Benzing was one of my favorite teachers who was the first to introduce me to the stock market in his math class leading me to my current profession. He surprised me a month ago when I ran into him at Home Depot and was immediatley greeted with a "Hi Bobby, how are you"...after all of these years, he remembered me, i had no words. He was and still is a great man and consider myself very fortunate to have known him.

We were completely devastated and saddened to learn of Bill's passing. We've known Bill since his first year of teaching,as our son was in his first class and we were looking forward to having him teach our grandsons during the next few years. I have fond memories of coaching Pop Warner with Bill and working with him as a member of the Bethel Exchange Club, where he devoted countless hours to the youth programs. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy, Richard, Sr [Teach], Bobby, Rick, Beth and their families. Rest In Peace Friend.

Nancy - I can not find words to say how much this hurts, Bill was my true friend from our first day in kindergarten, to that tremendous game he pitched and won against Ridgefield High our senior year, to the breakfast we shared just a week ago. We had a true connection. His devotion to you and St. Mary's will be a vision I will never forget. My daily payers are with you. Kevin Cleary

Our sincere prayers and heartfelt sympathy go to Nancy and all of Billy's family. Billy was a shining star on the Western campus whose love and laughter captured all who knew him. Our wedding party ('74) wouldn't have been complete without him; he was quite the comedian. What a gift he must have been all these years to the students he has inspired!
Billy, you will be missed. We are all better people for having known you.
