Garnell Mond, 61, of LaSalle, was welcomed to Heaven with the Lord on Friday, September 30, 2022 after passing away peacefully at his home.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Abundant Life Fellowship, LaSalle with Pastor Chico Perez officiating. Burial will follow in Peru City Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the LaSalle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller-Pagani Funeral Home, LaSalle.
Garnell was born March 2, 1961 in Shelby, MS to Louis and Eddie B. (London) Mond. He was a graduate of William Jones College Preparatory High School in Chicago. He married Mary Gadison in Gunnison, MS. They were married for over 35 years.
Garnell was a highly decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, serving several enlistments over 10 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He received training in Georgia, Korea and Turkey. He served as a tactical satellite/microwave systems operator. As Team Chief and Section Chief, he was responsible for installation, operation and maintenance of equipment as well as being charged with the training and welfare of his team members. He was also responsible for supervising and training several Turkish Army servicemembers. He also performed the additional duty as assistant noncommissioned officer-in-charge for the Landsoutheast Command Honor Guard. Throughout his service, he received the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Awards, NCO Professional Development Ribbon and was an expert rifleman. In his evaluations, his superiors always gave him exceptional reviews. "He sets high standards in appearance and military bearing both on and off duty... He exhibits military courtesy, meticulous attention to detail and a cheerful cooperative approach to all problems and tasks...His loyalty, trustworthiness, high morals and military conduct were of high order worthy of emulation by his associates...His outstanding qualities of leadership were demonstrated in all areas requiring the highest degree of professional skill...His devotion to duty and outstanding achievements reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army...SGT Mond is one of the finest young Noncommissioned Officers in the Army...His proficiency and vast knowledge of our NATO unique equipment has been proven time and again in his ability to provide superior communications to a four star NATO Headquarters."
Garnell was a member of Abundant Life Fellowship in LaSalle. Serving God was important to him and he enjoyed serving as a gatekeeper and custodian for Abundant Life Fellowship, LaSalle and for many years at Mighty Word Church, LaSalle. He was a jack of all trades. He owned and operated Mond Lawn Care from which he was retired. He took great pride in tending his property and especially enjoyed taking care of flowers and plants. Garnell loved to cook and shared his love for people and cooking most recently at Grandma Rosie's in Spring Valley and Princeton.
Garnell was a sports fanatic. He enjoyed car races and frequently went to races at the Byron Dragway. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially baseball and the Chicago Cubs. Garnell also loved his naps.
Garnell's greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children whom he loved. He was a very special uncle to many and was like a father to them. He enjoyed cruising and was frequently hopping in the car with his wife, whom he cherished, to take her wherever she pleased. They were sure to stop at a local eatery for some good food and a barbershop, to receive a fresh cut. On Saturday mornings, you could find him in his garage with the music up loud and him bobbing his head to the music as he caught up with the odds and ends around the home. Never one to sit still, you could always find Garnell taking care of his home and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; four children, Ranelle Mond, Charnelle Mond and Teagan Gadison all at home in LaSalle and Kendall Eubanks of Decatur; one grandson, Kairo Eubanks; three sisters, Clora Mond and Mary Mond both of Decatur and Marjani Shelton of Rosedale, MS; six brothers, Eugene Smith of Harvey, Louis (Heidi) Mond Jr. of Frankfurt, Germany, Gregory (Karen) Mond and Robert Mond both of Decatur, Deconte' Mond of Evansville, IN and Napoleon (Tina) Mond of St. Louis, MO; his mother-in-law, Lula Gadison of Gunnison, MS; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends, Phillip Leaks of Memphis, TN, Cedric Williams of Chicago and Donald Robinson of Harker Heights, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Willie J. Beans.
