Died: August 31, 2024
Paul Bernabei, age 77, of Dalzell, Illinois passed away peacefully August 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Dear husband of 50 years to Paula Bernabei, née Doherty and adored father to Megan Haughey (Matt), Molly Fenlon (Judd), Katie Fenlon (Bob) and Maripat Giefer (Mike). Proud grandpa to Kate, Joe and Ellie Haughey; Jack, Caroline, Emily and Maggie Fenlon; Joe, Charlie, Matt and Emma Fenlon; and Matt, Isla and Michael Giefer.
Preceded in death by his parents Chester and Toni Bernabei, father and mother-in-law, John and Paula Doherty.
Paul came to Minnesota in 1965 to play basketball at St. John's University and spent the past 5+ decades pursuing his lifelong passion of education, coaching and training. Paul was a diehard Cubs fan who lived to see them win a World Series in 2016. He rarely missed his grandkids' sports activities and spent countless hours driving to ballfields, gyms and rinks throughout the Midwest.
The visitation will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in St. Paul, MN, followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM Saturday. Private family burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, MN or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Very sorry to hear of Paul´s passing. He was my childhood hero! I grew up just 4 houses away from him in a very small town in Illinois. Paul was 6 years older than me. My friends and I all admired him and wanted to be just like him. He would take time out and teach and coach us in baseball and basketball. He was never too busy to stop and play ball with us for a few minutes, leave us with words of encouragement and just make our day. What a great person he was! Rest in Peace Hero Paul.

My heartfelt condolences to Paul's big and beautiful family. And to his many friends and to all of the people that he touched in his remarkable life. He was my teacher at St. Bede Academy and had a profound influence on me and on the direction of my life. I am forever grateful for his wisdom, his compassion, and his infectious energy. What a good, good person.
